What heat pump rebates pay in Bellevue
We read four Puget Sound Energy heat pump pages on October 6, 2026. All of them say to use a PSE Recommended Energy Professional or Trade Ally, to be a single-family customer and to have no existing heat pump serving the main living area (except for the heat pump upgrade rebate).
Electric resistance heat to heat pump
Baseboards, wall heaters, radiant heat or an electric furnace. Ductless systems must be variable-speed, at least three quarters of a ton, with a head in the main living area and no ducts. $2,400 for income-qualified households.
Gas furnace plus heat pump (hybrid)
A ducted heat pump added to a PSE-gas furnace, set so the furnace stays off above a set outdoor temperature. $2,400 by income.
Income-qualified gas to heat pump
For PSE natural gas customers who pass the income check and replace their primary gas heat with a ducted or ductless heat pump.
Old ducted heat pump to new one
For a centrally ducted electric heat pump past its warranty. $2,400 by income. Ductless units do not count.
State home electrification rebates
King County ($3,775,416) and Energy Smart Eastside ($500,000) are state partners for households at or below 150 percent of area median income. No per-household amount is listed.
Working it out
A Bellevue home with electric baseboards that installs a ductless heat pump gets $1,500, or $2,400 if the household passes PSE's income check. A home with a PSE gas furnace that adds a hybrid heat pump gets $1,500, or $2,400 by income. A home that passes the income check and drops gas heat entirely gets $4,000. These are separate paths, so you pick the one that matches your system.
Bellevue's split between gas and electric
The US Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) says about 52 percent of Bellevue homes use electricity as their main heat and about 46 percent use utility gas. In a city split that evenly, both the electric rebate and the gas-to-electric rebates matter. About 52 percent of households own their homes and about 46 percent of homes are detached houses, which tells you roughly how many households can choose their own equipment.
The hybrid option
A hybrid system keeps your gas furnace as a backup and adds a heat pump to do most of the heating. PSE requires a balance point of 30 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, calculated with a tool such as BetterBuilt NW's sizing tool, and a setting so that the furnace does not run above the lockout temperature. For many gas homes that is a gentler first step than removing the furnace. The page requires a central ducted heat pump, so ductless units do not qualify for this rebate.
Rules that can surprise you
A home that already has a heat pump serving the main living area is not eligible, except for the upgrade rebate, and PSE says that is true regardless of whether the heat pump works. Accessory dwelling units with a heat pump also block the rebate. If your system uses auxiliary electric heat, PSE requires locking it out above a set outdoor temperature, and compressor lockout must be disabled or set low. Your contractor should know these rules, but ask them to confirm each one in writing.
How to claim a Bellevue heat pump rebate
- Look at your bills to see whether PSE sends electric, gas or both.
- Check Efficiency Boost or the moderate-income form on PSE's site before you pick equipment.
- Hire a PSE Recommended Energy Professional or Trade Ally.
- Ask for each rule on the page to be confirmed in the bid.
- Apply within the time on the rebate page. The moderate-income rebate must be filed within 30 days of the install.
Common questions
How much is the PSE heat pump rebate?
$1,500 for electric heat to heat pump, hybrid heat pump or heat pump upgrade, and $2,400 by income. Income-qualified gas customers get $4,000 to switch.
Can I do the install myself?
No. PSE says you may not use an out-of-network contractor or do the work yourself.
Do ductless systems qualify?
For electric resistance to heat pump, yes, if they meet the rules. For hybrid and heat pump upgrade rebates, only ducted systems qualify.
What if I already have a small heat pump?
A home with an existing heat pump serving the main living area is not eligible, except for the heat pump upgrade rebate.
Is there a federal credit?
No. The IRS says the home improvement credit covers improvements through December 31, 2025.
