What the Census says about Montpelier
The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey counts 3,721 occupied homes. 1,678 heat mainly with oil or kerosene, 841 with propane, 583 with electricity, 322 with wood and 221 with piped gas. 1,487 of 3,921 housing units (38%) were built in 1939 or earlier. 53% of households own their home and 47% rent.
Propane and wood households
Propane is a larger share here than in Barre, and it arrives by truck like oil. A ductless heat pump can carry daytime heating, leaving propane for the coldest nights. Wood households (322) can use Efficiency Vermont's weatherization and heat pump offers, though wood-heating customers are excluded from its ground source rebate.
Renters and small buildings
911 units sit in two-, three- and four-unit buildings, and 894 in larger ones. Efficiency Vermont's heat pump rebates are open to rental properties, though the income bonus is not. A tenant who pays for heat should ask the landlord about weatherization, which is a primary-residence offer at the $7,000 tier.
Cold
Montpelier's average January low is -11.9°C, tied with Barre as the lowest average, and the record low between 2015 and 2024 was -30.7°C. That is why every offer on this site for Montpelier is for cold-climate rated equipment.
Dates to watch in Montpelier
Green Mountain Power's all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle rebates apply through December 31, 2026, as does its $200 induction cooktop rebate. Efficiency Vermont's weatherization offer, effective July 1, 2026, lasts while funding lasts. Heat pump discounts changed on January 1, 2026 for ductless systems and April 1, 2025 for ducted systems, so older figures you may see on other sites can be out of date.
Smaller upgrades add up
Efficiency Vermont lists up to $100 on a smart thermostat, up to $400 on a clothes dryer, $150 on a window air conditioner, $400 on a wood or pellet stove at purchase and from $25 on a dehumidifier. For a wood-heating household that is worth a look, because the stove rebate applies at the register. Our appliance guide lists the products and Green Mountain Power's own yard and kitchen rebates.
