The rebates that matter most in South Burlington
We re-read Efficiency Vermont's rebate list and Green Mountain Power's program pages on October 5, 2026. South Burlington is Green Mountain Power territory. Amounts are maximums.
Heat pump
Efficiency Vermont instant discounts by system type, plus up to $600 for controls. Green Mountain Power adds $2,000 per condenser for households at or under 80% of area median income ($99,750 for four in Chittenden County).
Weatherization
75% of qualifying insulation and air sealing, higher cap if income-eligible, while funding lasts.

Home battery
Green Mountain Power's Bring Your Own Device program pays by the kW of storage you share at peaks, with $100 more per kW for some solar retrofits.
Electric vehicle and charger
Green Mountain Power: up to $2,500 for an all-electric vehicle, and up to $650 toward a home charger installation if you buy or lease in 2026.
Appliances
Efficiency Vermont rebates on thermostats, dryers, dehumidifiers and stoves, and Green Mountain Power's $200 induction cooktop rebate.

Next door, but a different utility
Burlington Electric's heat pump tables and EV rebates stop at the Burlington city line. South Burlington customers use Green Mountain Power, which pays $850 to $950 per kW for batteries and up to $2,500 for an all-electric vehicle, and Efficiency Vermont's statewide discounts. If you moved from Burlington, expect the numbers on your old neighbours' pages to differ from yours.
Gas first, then electricity
The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey shows 5,971 homes (63%) on natural gas, 2,263 (24%) on electricity, 544 (6%) on oil, 264 on propane and 202 on wood. Gas customers use Vermont Gas for weatherization rebates ($4,000 to $9,500 for single-family homes, by income). Non-gas customers use Efficiency Vermont's $3,000 or $7,000 offer. Because a heat pump on a gas home may not lower the bill, the electric, oil and propane homes (3,071 of them) have the clearest heat pump case.
Newer, owner-occupied and attached
62% of households own their home. 41% of units are detached houses, 17% attached townhouses and 26% sit in buildings of ten or more. Only 3% were built before 1940, which is why South Burlington looks unlike Burlington, Rutland or Barre. If you live in a condo or townhouse, outdoor equipment such as a heat pump condenser or a charger may need association approval, which is a rule we have not verified for any specific association.
Climate
The average January low is -9.3°C and the record low between 2015 and 2024 was -29.8°C, the mildest pair of the five Vermont cities we cover alongside Burlington. Cold-climate rated equipment is still what the rebates require.
Dates to watch in South Burlington
Green Mountain Power's vehicle rebates and induction cooktop rebate apply to purchases through December 31, 2026, and Vermont Gas's weatherization rebates and financing offers are good through the same date. Efficiency Vermont's weatherization offer, effective July 1, 2026, lasts while funding lasts. For a gas-heated household planning insulation, the Vermont Gas window is the one with a hard end date, so book the assessment early enough for the work to finish by December 31.
