What Cambridge homeowners can claim
Mass Save funds nearly all residential energy rebates across Massachusetts, including Cambridge. All amounts below are in US dollars.
🔥 Heat Pump
$2,650/ton, capped at $8,500 for whole-home systems (partial-home systems can add up to $1,000 in weatherization and sizing bonuses). Income-qualified: up to $16,000 (air-source) or $25,000 (ground-source). Only R-32 or R-454B refrigerant systems qualify — R-410A heat pumps are no longer eligible as of January 1, 2026.
🟫 Insulation & Air Sealing
75% covered for all Cambridge homeowners. Income-eligible households (under 60% AMI) pay $0.
💨 HRV & Ventilation
Mass Save may cover ventilation when it's needed as part of a weatherization project. Ask during your home energy assessment; we couldn't confirm a standalone amount.
☀️ Solar (SMART 3.0)
Locked-in production payment for a fixed term once enrolled.
🔌 Battery Storage
No upfront Mass Save rebate. ConnectedSolutions pays you each year for letting the utility use your battery at peak times (MassCEC example: about $1,375/yr for a 5 kW battery), plus the SMART storage adder if paired with solar.

🚘 EV Charger

📋 Home Energy Assessment
No-cost first step (in person, virtual or online). Needed for insulation discounts and helps you qualify for whole-home heat pump rebates.
🔌 Appliances
$500 for an induction cooktop when switching from gas or propane, $50 for an ENERGY STAR dryer, plus washer and fridge recycling offers.
How to claim it
- Schedule your free Mass Save home energy assessment
- Get quotes from Mass Save-participating contractors in Cambridge
- Work is installed
- Contractor or you file the rebate paperwork with Mass Save
- Rebate is paid after Mass Save approves it. Some offers (like heat pump water heaters) are instant; mailed rebates can take months, so keep copies of everything
Cambridge-specific programs
Cambridge waives certain permitting fees for heat pump installations, on top of standard Mass Save rebates (see Cambridge Inspectional Services mechanical fees). The Cambridge Energy Alliance also partners directly with Mass Save as a local resource to help residents navigate incentives and find contractors.

Renting or living in a condo? Here's what actually applies to you
Cambridge has one of the highest renter shares of any Massachusetts city, so most of the numbers above won't apply directly to most residents here. Here's what changes:
If you rent
You can't claim the heat pump, insulation, or solar rebates — those go to whoever owns the property. The free Mass Save home energy assessment is still worth requesting through your landlord, since it often comes with a free smart thermostat and other no-cost measures. If you want the bigger upgrades done, the ask has to go to your landlord — point them to this page.
If you own a condo unit
In-unit upgrades you control yourself — a heat pump water heater, in-suite windows, an in-unit heat pump — can qualify for the Mass Save rebates above, usually with your condo association's approval for anything touching shared walls or exterior systems. Get that approval in writing before your contractor applies.
If it's a whole-building retrofit
Heat pumps, insulation, and solar for the whole building go through the condo association as a group decision, and Mass Save's multi-family program handles the paperwork rather than the single-unit process on this page. The HEAT Loan and Mass Save's free assessment are both still available — your association or property manager coordinates the application, not individual owners.
