Up to $1,000 plus $500 a year (PSE Flex)

Home Battery Incentives in Washington

The one battery payment we could verify in Washington is Puget Sound Energy's Flex Batteries program. It pays up to $1,000 per battery to enroll and up to $500 a year for letting the utility use the battery on busy days.

What Washington utilities pay for home batteries

We read Puget Sound Energy's Flex Batteries page and battery storage page on October 6, 2026. We did not find a battery rebate from Seattle City Light, Avista, Tacoma Power or Clark Public Utilities on the pages we read, so we list none for them.

PSE Flex Batteries

Up to $1,000 plus $500 a year

Enrollment incentive depends on battery size and on taking part in Flex events. The program is run for PSE by Uplight.

Closed

Federal residential clean energy credit

$0

The 30 percent credit, which covered battery storage, does not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025.

Open

State sales tax exemption

Solar only

The sales tax exemption covers solar generating equipment and installation. We did not find language covering a stand-alone battery.

Working it out

If a PSE customer enrolls one compatible battery and earns the top amounts, the first year could bring up to $1,000 plus up to $500, or $1,500. After that, the yearly amount is up to $500. PSE says the enrollment incentive depends on the battery size and on participation, so your real figure may be lower. Ask Uplight, which runs the program, for the numbers for your battery model.

How Flex Batteries works

PSE calls busy times on the grid Flex events. During an event, your battery helps send power or hold back demand, and PSE pays you for it. The program page says you earn rewards automatically, with no action needed from you, and that you keep backup power for outages. It lists questions about whether you can join if you have net metering or time-of-use rates, but the answers sit behind its question list, so we did not read them. Contact Uplight support at [email protected] or 1-888-793-9347 before you buy a battery just for this program.

What PSE says about installing a battery

PSE's battery storage page says the utility offers installation guidelines for batteries that connect to its grid and encourages installers and owners to report installations. Its tariff, Schedule 80, covers how storage connects. If you are adding a battery to solar, ask your installer to handle the utility paperwork and show you the approval in writing before the battery goes live.

Batteries without a rebate

A battery can still be worth buying for backup power, but no verified Washington rebate lowers the price outside the PSE program. Treat the price you are quoted as the real cost, ask what the warranty covers and how many hours of power the battery gives your home in an outage. Any quote that counts on the federal credit for a 2026 install is out of date. Our Washington solar guide covers the sales tax exemption on panels.

Lower-income households

PSE says Efficiency Boost has higher incentives for income-qualified customers on home batteries, with its own page for them. We did not read the amounts, so check PSE's page. The State Department of Commerce's local home electrification rebates do not list batteries.

How to approach a Washington battery in 2026

  1. Find your utility on your bill. Only PSE has a verified battery program on our list.
  2. If you are a PSE customer, ask Uplight whether your battery model is compatible before buying.
  3. Ask your installer to handle the utility connection paperwork.
  4. Do not accept a quote that counts on the federal credit for a 2026 install.
  5. Compare the price with the hours of backup power you get.
