PSE&G rebates up to $10,000

Home Energy Rebates in Newark

Newark is a city of renters, two-family buildings and older homes, and that shapes which rebates you can use. PSE&G pays for heat pumps, water heaters, appliances and a home battery, and the state pays for free weatherization. The federal tax credits are gone. This page sorts the money by who you are in Newark: an owner, a renter or a lower-income household. We read each program's own page on October 6, 2026.

Newark's housing, in numbers

The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) counts 121,546 homes in Newark, and 113,384 are someone's usual home. Renters live in 75.6% of them and owners in 24.4%. Buildings with two to four homes make up 40.6% of the city's housing, detached houses 12.6% and attached houses such as rowhouses 10.6%. The rest are larger apartment buildings.

That mix means a Newark rebate usually has two people behind it: an owner who can apply and a tenant who lives with the result. The sections below say who does what.

If you own a one- to four-family building

PSE&G's decarbonization rules cover single-family and attached homes of one to four units, as long as you own the home. That includes the two-family house, which is the most common building type in Newark. You can use the heat pump, water heater and battery rebates, and the on-bill repayment option spreads the cost over your PSE&G bills with no interest. The company requires 12 months of on-time payments, with no credit check.

If you rent

Tenants cannot apply for the heat pump rebates, because the program asks for the owner of the house. You still have options. The appliance rebates are post-purchase and aimed at PSE&G customers, and the free Whole Home Energy Assessment can bring a free smart thermostat and small products into your home. Check the terms before you buy, and ask your landlord before changing anything fixed to the building. If your household income is low, call Comfort Partners.

What heats Newark homes

Utility gas heats 68.3% of homes, electricity 22.6%, bottled gas 2.8% and fuel oil 2.5%. Gas and oil homes can use the large replacement rebate. Electric-heat homes use the standard instant rebate and the heat pump water heater rebate. About 65.6% of Newark's homes were built before 1980 and 23.7% before 1940, so a contractor should check insulation and ductwork before sizing any equipment. Free weatherization first can make a smaller, cheaper heat pump enough.

Free help for lower incomes

Two free programs can reach Newark households. PSE&G Home Weatherization covers households with income between 250% and 400% of the federal poverty level, those in moderate-income areas, NJ SHARES members and overburdened communities. Comfort Partners covers households at or below 250% of poverty, or on SNAP, Section 8, SSI, TANF or General Assistance. Both can include insulation and air sealing at no cost. Call one and let them route you.
