The rebates that matter most in Barre

Heat pump
Efficiency Vermont instant discounts by system type, plus up to $600 for controls. Green Mountain Power adds $2,000 per condenser for households at or under 80% of area median income ($91,200 for four in Washington County).
Weatherization
75% of qualifying insulation and air sealing, higher cap if income-eligible, while funding lasts.
Heat pump water heater
Efficiency Vermont, through the Green Mountain Power page for your area.
Home battery
Green Mountain Power's Bring Your Own Device program pays by the kW of storage you share at peaks, with $100 more per kW for some solar retrofits.
Electric vehicle and charger
Green Mountain Power: up to $2,500 for an all-electric vehicle, and up to $650 toward a home charger installation if you buy or lease in 2026.
Appliances
Efficiency Vermont rebates on thermostats, dryers, dehumidifiers and stoves, and Green Mountain Power's $200 induction cooktop rebate.

Barre in numbers
The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey counts 4,094 occupied homes. 2,385 (58%) heat mainly with oil or kerosene, 627 (15%) with propane, 569 (14%) with electricity, 201 (5%) with piped gas and 175 (4%) with wood. 2,012 of 4,335 housing units (46%) were built in 1939 or earlier.
An even split between owners and renters
2,062 households own and 2,032 rent. 1,426 units are in two-, three- and four-unit buildings and 883 in larger ones. Efficiency Vermont says rental property owners are not eligible for the heat pump income bonus. A tenant who pays for heat and a landlord who owns the building often need to agree before anything is installed.
Compared with its neighbour
Barre and Montpelier share Green Mountain Power, Washington County's income limits and an average January low of -11.9°C. Barre has a higher oil share (58% against 45%) and a higher pre-1940 share (46% against 38%). Its record low between 2015 and 2024 was -30.9°C.
Dates to watch in Barre
Green Mountain Power's vehicle rebates apply through December 31, 2026, and its induction cooktop rebate covers purchases through the same date. Efficiency Vermont's weatherization offer, effective July 1, 2026, lasts while funding lasts, and its income limits changed on July 1, 2026. If you checked your eligibility before July, check again.
Free help for lower-income households
Efficiency Vermont lists free appliances, products and services for income-qualified Vermonters, a free Weatherization Assistance Program through a partner and a free Virtual Home Energy Visit. With half of Barre's households renting and oil as the main fuel for most, a free visit is an easy way for a tenant or a small landlord to find out whether the building is a good candidate for the paid programs. We did not read the income limits, so check the program pages.
