Naperville homes in numbers
The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey counts 57,135 homes in Naperville and 54,847 lived in year-round. Owners are 74.8% of households and renters 25.2%. Detached houses are 62.8% of homes, attached houses 12.2% and buildings of two to four homes 4.6%.
Only 25.8% of homes were built before 1980, and 23.1% since 2000. Utility gas heats 86.1% of homes and electricity 11.9%.
Two utilities, two rule books
Your electric rebates come from the city. Your gas rebates come from Nicor Gas. The two do not share forms or deadlines. The city gives a one-time credit on your electric bill. Nicor pays a prepaid card or a check six to eight weeks after you apply, and wants the application within 90 days of the work.
Why ComEd pages do not apply
Many web pages about Illinois rebates mention ComEd. In Naperville those do not apply, since ComEd does not deliver your electricity. Read our Naperville Electric page for the city's offers.
A smart plan for 2026 and 2027
If you want a heat pump, check that city funds remain, then install and apply within 120 days. If you want attic insulation or windows, the city money is closed now, so decide whether to use Nicor's rebate this year or to wait and ask the city about 2027. Nicor's attic rebate pays $400. The city's was $1 a square foot up to $2,500 in 2026.
Renters, owners and what is missing
One Naperville household in four rents. The city's heat pump and thermostat pages say owners or renters can apply, though a tenant still needs the landlord's permission to put in a heat pump. We found no Naperville rebate for a home battery, an electric car charger or a heat pump water heater on an official page, so we list none. The federal credits that once covered those ended after 2025.
Solar
Illinois Shines credit payments are the state's main solar incentive, but we did not read which pricing group applies at a Naperville address. Ask an approved vendor. See our Illinois solar guide.
