What Washington utilities pay for smart thermostats
We read each utility's page on October 6, 2026. Avista was not checked for a thermostat rebate, so we list none for it.
Clark Public Utilities
An instant rebate through the utility's online marketplace on four models, for homes heated with an electric furnace or heat pump.
Puget Sound Energy
$175 by income for central systems or $130 for line-voltage thermostats. Heat must be electric or natural gas from PSE. Buy and install by December 31, 2026.
Tacoma Power
Up to two rebates, one per heating system, for homes with an electric forced-air furnace or central heat pump. Line-voltage thermostats earn $25.
Seattle City Light
An instant discount on Mysa and Sinope thermostats bought from the maker's City Light page.
Working it out
A Vancouver, Washington household with an electric furnace that buys a thermostat from Clark's marketplace gets $140 off at checkout, which Clark says can make one model free. A Tacoma household with an electric furnace and a separate heat pump in an addition could claim two $75 rebates. A Seattle household pays $50 less on a Mysa or Sinope unit.
Rules that differ
Puget Sound Energy requires a one-thermostat central system using a heat pump, furnace or boiler for the $75 rebate, a thermostat registered with the maker over Wi-Fi, and no earlier PSE thermostat rebate at the same address in the last five years. Apply within 60 days of purchase. Tacoma Power requires the thermostat to be on the Bonneville Power Administration approved list, with occupancy detection, scheduling, Wi-Fi and heat pump auxiliary heat control, and you must request the rebate within 90 days. Dual-fuel systems and cooling-only systems do not qualify at Tacoma Power.
Check the model before you buy
Each program accepts only listed models. Clark's marketplace shows four. Seattle City Light's discount applies to Mysa and Sinope thermostats bought through those makers' City Light pages. PSE and Tacoma Power keep lists of approved products. A thermostat that works with your system but is not on the list earns nothing. Match your heating type to the thermostat as well, since a line-voltage thermostat for baseboard heat is a different product from one for a central furnace.
Is a smart thermostat worth buying?
The pages we read say a smart thermostat helps control heating, but do not give a savings number that we can quote. The Seattle City Light page says setting your thermostat lower when you sleep or are away can save as much as $180 a year, though that is advice about any thermostat, not about a smart one. Treat the rebate as a way to lower the price of a device you would buy for convenience, and treat bill savings as a bonus.
Other Washington utilities
If your utility is not on this list, call it and ask. Avista's page that we read lists no thermostat rebate, but we did not search every sub-page. Our Washington rebate hub shows which programs we verified.
