What water heater rebates pay in Bellevue
We read Puget Sound Energy's heat pump water heater page on October 6, 2026. The page lists the rebate for existing single-family homes, and the new equipment must use PSE electricity.
PSE heat pump water heater rebate
For a qualifying Tier 3 or Tier 4 heat pump water heater installed on or after January 1, 2026.
Efficiency Boost water heater rebate
For income-qualified households. Check your eligibility on PSE's income form.
State home electrification rebates
Heat pump water heaters are on the state's list for households at or below 150 percent of area median income. King County and Energy Smart Eastside are partners. No per-household amount is listed.
Federal tax credit
The IRS says the energy efficient home improvement credit covers improvements made through December 31, 2025.
Working it out
If a qualifying heat pump water heater with installation costs $3,200, which is only an example, the $1,000 rebate leaves $2,200. An income-qualified household would pay $2,100 after the $1,100 rebate. PSE says the rebate cannot be more than the price you pay after tax, so make sure your invoice shows the real amount.
Which Bellevue homes this fits
The US Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) says about 52 percent of Bellevue homes use electricity as their main heat and about 46 percent use utility gas. The survey does not count water heaters. PSE's page says the equipment must consume PSE electricity after installation, so the rebate fits households with an electric account, whether the old tank was electric or gas. Ask PSE if you are switching from a gas tank. About 52 percent of households own their homes, and about 48 percent rent, so a renter needs the landlord to apply.
The 30-day rule
Your application must be submitted within 30 days of installation. You need an online PSE account to apply online. Gather the electronic image of your paid installation invoice and purchase receipt, which must show the installation date, the address, the brand, the model numbers of all rebated equipment and the amount you paid. If one of those is missing, the application can be sent back. Set a reminder for the day after the install.
What Tier 3 and Tier 4 mean
The tiers come from a regional rating system for heat pump water heaters, and PSE links to an explanation. Higher tiers use less electricity. The rebate only pays for Tier 3 and Tier 4 models. PSE also says that equipment replaced under warranty is not eligible for a second rebate. Ask the installer for the tier on the spec sheet before you buy, and check that the equipment is installed on or after January 1, 2026.
Also ask the installer about the room. A heat pump water heater pulls warmth from the air around it, so it needs space and should not sit in a closet with no airflow. Ask where the cool air will go, whether a drain is needed and who hauls away the old tank. Put the answers in the bid so you can compare two quotes line by line.
