ComEd and Nicor Gas

Home Energy Rebates in Aurora, Illinois

Aurora homes get electricity from ComEd and gas from Nicor Gas, and each pays different rebates. ComEd takes up to $2,000 off a heat pump. Nicor Gas pays $150 to $225 for a better gas furnace and up to $600 for sealing and insulating. The federal tax credits ended after 2025. This page lists what we confirmed on October 6, 2026, with the local housing numbers that decide which rebate fits.

Aurora homes in numbers

The Census Bureau's survey for 2020 to 2024 counts 63,763 homes in Aurora and 61,317 lived in year-round. Owners are 66.4% of households and renters 33.6%. Detached houses are 58.7% of homes, attached houses 16.6% and buildings of two to four homes 8.7%.

Because two in three households own, most can sign for a contractor themselves. The Census data shows 42.5% of homes were built before 1980, 13.5% before 1940 and 24.8% since 2000.

Heating fuel

Utility gas heats 82.5% of Aurora homes. Electricity heats 14.8%, bottled gas 1.5% and fuel oil 0.2%. That makes Nicor Gas's rebates relevant to most homes, and ComEd's heat pump discount relevant to anyone leaving gas or oil or replacing electric heat.

Pick the order of upgrades

Seal and insulate first, since Nicor's attic rebate requires air sealing to be done first. Then replace equipment. Sealing can let a smaller, cheaper heat pump or furnace do the job. Nicor's attic rebate needs the old insulation to be R-20 or less and the final level R-49 or more.

Which company to call

For electric questions call ComEd at 855-433-2700. For gas rebates call Nicor Gas at 877-886-4239. Your electric company and gas company are separate, and each program has its own forms and deadlines. Nicor needs the application within 90 days of installation.

What is not offered

Nicor Gas does not pay you to switch from gas to electric, and its terms say electric products replacing gas ones are not eligible. We found no Aurora city rebate for home energy upgrades on an official page, so we list none. We also did not confirm a battery or electric car charger rebate from ComEd, so we show no amount for those. If a contractor quotes you a rebate that is not on this page, ask for the program name and phone number and check it.

Renters and landlords

About one household in three rents. A tenant can claim ComEd appliance and thermostat rebates on their own account. Heat pumps, insulation and furnaces change the building, so the owner usually applies. Nicor allows a landlord to apply for a rebate on a rental home, as long as it is a single-family home or has up to two units.

Solar in Aurora

ComEd's area is Group B in Illinois Shines. A home system of 10 kW or less earns $80.77 per credit in 2026-27, plus $20 per credit if you own it. See our Illinois solar guide.
