Where to go, and how the rebates work
The Arctic Energy Alliance's main office is at 101-5102 51st Street, Yellowknife, phone 867-920-3333 or toll free 1-877-755-5855. It is open Monday to Thursday, 9:00 to 5:00, and closed Friday to Sunday. Its rebates are after-purchase and by mail. The AEA must receive your application within 3 months of the purchase date on your receipt. For the 2026/27 fiscal year, April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027, you can claim up to two rebates on the same product type per household, and the AEA says rebates are no longer available on heating systems that use fossil fuels.
Insulation
With 11% of homes needing major repairs, an insulation job often comes with other work. The AEA pays up to $8,000 for exterior wall insulation, $1,500 for ceilings, $500 for exposed floors, $2,500 for basements, $625 for basement headers and $2,000 for crawlspaces. You claim them on the Residential Insulation Rebate Application Form. We did not read the AEA's rules for how the amount depends on the area you insulate, so ask the AEA what a specific job would earn before you commit.
Stoves, drain water heat recovery and solar
A wood stove or a wood pellet stove earns 50% of the purchase cost up to $2,000, not counting installation or accessories such as the chimney. A drain water heat recovery system with at least 30% efficiency earns $700. A programmable thermostat earns 50% up to $150, and you can claim up to 5 a year as an individual. The Renewable Energy program pays up to $20,000 for solar panels or ground-source heat pumps, and up to $30,000 for biomass heating such as a wood-pellet boiler. It is first come, first served with pre-approval, and the AEA asks you to contact them before you apply. It no longer funds grid-connected renewable electricity in communities that use hydroelectricity.
Heat pumps in Yellowknife
We found no AEA rebate for air-source heat pumps. That is a negative result, not proof that none exists, so ask the AEA. Its news list includes a June 9, 2026 study of how well heat pumps work in Yellowknife, which is a good read before you buy. Ottawa's National Heat Pump Rebate is expected in early 2027.
