Why we list no Duquesne Light amount
Duquesne Light's own website showed a security check when our reader visited, and we do not get past those. Its rebate store, run by a contractor, loaded and says plainly that rebates are not available yet. Sites that still quote Duquesne Light dollar amounts are quoting older figures. We will not print them as if they were open. When the store reopens, the amounts will come from that page.
Pittsburgh's housing
The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) counts 161,908 homes in Pittsburgh. Detached houses are the biggest group at 43.6%, followed by 14.5% in buildings of two to four units and 14.1% attached homes. Pittsburgh has the oldest stock of the four Pennsylvania cities we cover on one measure: 48.3% of homes were built before 1940, and 83.0% before 1980. Only 9.6% date from 2000 or later.
How Pittsburgh heats
Gas heats 75.2% of households, electricity 21.0%, bottled gas 1.9% and fuel oil only 0.6%. Because oil is nearly absent, the oil-to-heat-pump switch that matters in Allentown is rare here. The better targets are the roughly one in five homes on electric heat, and any house whose old furnace is due. Renters are 52.3% of households, so many Pittsburgh decisions belong to a landlord.
Free weatherization is the open door
ACTION-Housing runs the state weatherization program for the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. It is free for owners, and for renters with a landlord's sign-off, whose income is at or below 200% of poverty. The 2025 limits on its page are $30,300 for one person, $42,300 for two, $53,300 for three and $64,300 for four, with $11,000 for each extra person. You need three months in the home and your gas and electric bills. No lien is placed on the property. To ask for an application, call 412-281-2102.
Timing your own upgrade
If your furnace has died, do not wait for Duquesne Light. A dead heating system cannot wait. If you can plan, watch the rebate store before you buy. We do not know the next round's rules or dates, so keep the paid invoice and ask your installer for the model numbers and AHRI certificate in writing, in case you can claim later.
