Most Common Question

Do I need PG&E pre-approval to get a heat pump rebate?

Short answer: Yes, if you're a PG&E customer. Federal programs ended in February 2026, but PG&E requires pre-approval before work starts. SMUD fringe customers have different rules.

PG&E Path (Most Bay Area):

Get PG&E pre-approval ($3,000–$4,500 rebate depending on equipment). Work done by approved contractor. Rebate applied at point of sale or sent as check.

SMUD Fringe Path (East Bay fringe):

SMUD offers $9,750 for air-source and $13,500 for ground-source heat pumps. No pre-approval needed. Better deal than PG&E if available in your area.
