Quick quiz: home energy in Penticton

Questions about Penticton, from the data behind this page. Tap an answer to see why.

1. Whose programs should a Penticton homeowner check first?

City of Penticton (FortisBC programs) is the utility we use for Penticton. Rebates often depend on who supplies your power or gas, so check yours first.

2. What is a typical January night low in Penticton?

Our weather sample for Penticton (2015-2024) shows an average January low of -2 °C. Cold-climate heat pumps are tested at low temperatures, so check the rating at your coldest days, not just the average.

3. About how many peak sun hours a day does Penticton get on average?

Our 2020-2024 sunshine sample for Penticton averages about 3.8 peak sun hours a day. Fewer hours means less solar power per panel, so the size of the system matters.

4. We list heat pump rebates for Penticton. What is the biggest 'up to' amount?

Our summary for Penticton: FortisBC: up to $4,000 for a heat pump; up to $12,000 if income-qualified (BC Hydro programs don't apply). The amount you get depends on your home, income and utility, so use the calculator.

5. Renters make up what share of Penticton households?

The 2021 Census counts 6,380 renter households out of 17,360 in Penticton. Many rebates go to owners, and some programs have separate rules for landlords and tenants.

A Penticton bungalow

A 1960s bungalow with 9 windows, a front door and a back door is 11 openings. At $100 each that pays $1,100. Add a basement window and a sliding door and it is $1,300.

Penticton's homes in numbers

The 2021 Census counted 17,360 households in Penticton. About 7,900 (46%) live in homes built before 1981, and 3,440 are owner-occupied detached houses from that period. About 36% live in apartments and 37% rent, so a good share of households cannot use a home rebate.

Hot summers, cold snaps

Penticton's average January low from 2015 to 2024 was -2.5°C and the coldest day was -24.8°C. Summers are hot and dry. A window with a low U-factor slows heat flow in both directions, which helps a home that is cooled in summer.

Why FortisBC

BC Hydro's rebate needs a BC Hydro account. Penticton's electricity comes from the City, so FortisBC's listing, which names Penticton, is the one to use. FortisBC asks that your primary heating system can heat at least half your home through the heating season to 22°C. Check its page for the current contractor wording.

Counting openings

FortisBC pays per window or door replaced. BC Hydro's matching version counts each rough opening as one, counts a bay window as one and excludes skylights. Ask FortisBC to confirm its counting before you sign.

Reading a U-factor label

The rebate needs a U-factor of 1.22 W/m2-K or lower, and lower means less heat loss. Many window labels show the older imperial scale instead. To convert, multiply the imperial number by 5.678. A label that says U-0.30 equals 1.70 W/m2-K, which is too high. A label that says U-0.21 equals about 1.19 W/m2-K and passes. Ask the contractor to quote the metric value for each model so you do not have to convert.

Timing and paperwork

You have six months from the invoice date to apply, and the application needs the invoice and a photo of the manufacturer label on each unit. BC Hydro publishes a window and door checklist and a sample invoice. Ask the contractor to fill in the invoice the way the sample does, listing each window or door separately. A vague invoice is the usual reason a claim is sent back.

If your income is lower

FortisBC runs a free home evaluation and upgrade program for income-qualified customers. Ask about it before paying for any work.

How to claim in Penticton

  1. Confirm your electricity is from the City of Penticton or your gas is from FortisBC.
  2. Get quotes that list the U-factor of each unit.
  3. Photograph the label on each unit.
  4. Keep the invoice and apply to FortisBC online.
  5. If your income may qualify, ask about the free program first.
