BC Hydro says the rebates can be combined, but the total can never be more than what you paid for the charger and the install.

Which company do you apply through?

Look at the name on your power bill. Most of BC, including Burnaby, Vancouver, Surrey, Victoria, Kamloops, Prince George and Nanaimo, is BC Hydro. Kelowna is FortisBC. Penticton has its own city power utility, and FortisBC's page lists Penticton customers as eligible, so Penticton homes apply through FortisBC. The base rebate is the same $350 either way. The $200 device rebate, the Peak Saver bonus and the community top-up are BC Hydro offers.

What the rebate pays for

The rebate covers the charger, the electrician's labour, permits, any electrical design work, and a power management device if you need one. It does not pay for only adding a 240 volt outlet. The charger must be new, bought (not leased) from a seller in Canada, certified for use in Canada, and on the eligible list. It must use a J1772 or NACS plug and be fixed to the wall, not portable.

If you already had a permitted 240 volt outlet and just plugged in a new charger, you can still apply with your charger receipt and a photo.

How to skip a panel upgrade

A Level 2 charger adds a big load to your home. If your electrical service is already close to full, an electrician may say you need a service upgrade. A power management device can often avoid that. Some share a circuit with another appliance, like your dryer, and switch the charger off while the dryer runs. Others watch your whole home's power use and slow or stop the charger when you get close to the limit.

BC Hydro says most homes do not need one. Ask your electrician to check your spare capacity first. BC Hydro suggests they look at your last 12 months of meter data, which you can download from your account. If you need a device, BC Hydro adds $200 to your rebate. The device and charger must have been installed on or after December 1, 2023.

What you need to apply

Apply online within 180 days of the install (6 months for FortisBC). What you send depends on who did the work:

  • Licensed electrician: the charger receipt, the electrician's itemized invoice, the electrical permit number and a photo of the charger.
  • Someone else: the charger receipt, the inspection invoice, a certificate that the work passed inspection, and a photo. You must get the permit yourself.
  • An existing 240 volt outlet: the charger receipt and a photo.

BC Hydro says it pays approved rebates within 90 days of your application.

Extra money in some towns and postal codes

Kamloops, Squamish and Whistler add to the base rebate automatically, up to 75% of your cost. The Regional District of Nanaimo has its own top-up with a separate application, and it covers the regional district's electoral areas, not the City of Nanaimo. BC Hydro also lists an enhanced rebate for Indigenous Peoples.

BC Hydro's community-based offer adds up to $1,750 more in select postal codes. On October 16, 2026, those areas were in Abbotsford, Mount Lehman, the Campbell Heights part of Surrey, Maple Ridge, Burke Mountain, parts of Vancouver west of Cambie, parts of Victoria, Vernon, West Kelowna, communities between Kelowna and Vernon, Mission to Agassiz, Sun Peaks and White Rock. Only some postal codes in each place qualify, so check yours on BC Hydro's page. We found no city top-up for Burnaby, Vancouver as a whole, or Surrey as a whole.

Electrical service upgrades and lighting

BC Hydro's list of home rebates has no rebate for an electrical service upgrade on its own, and no home lighting rebate. The one service upgrade rebate we found is through CleanBC's income-qualified Energy Savings Program: $5,000, $3,500 or $1,500 depending on your income level, and only when you switch from gas, oil or propane heat to a heat pump. For EV charging, the $200 power management device is the cheaper way to avoid an upgrade when it works for your home.

How to get your BC charger rebate

  1. Check the name on your power bill: BC Hydro or FortisBC.
  2. Pick a charger from the eligible list, and check your postal code for a community top-up.
  3. Ask a licensed electrician to check your spare capacity and pull the electrical permit.
  4. If your service is near full, ask about a power management device before a panel upgrade.
  5. Apply online within 180 days (6 months for FortisBC) with your receipts, permit number and a photo.
  6. With BC Hydro, enroll a smart charger in Peak Saver for the $250 credit.

Common questions

How much is the BC home EV charger rebate?

50% of the cost of buying and installing an eligible Level 2 charger, up to $350. BC Hydro customers can add $200 for a power management device and a $250 Peak Saver bill credit for a smart charger.

Can I get the rebate in a condo or townhome complex?

The $350 home rebate is for houses, row homes and duplexes. Buildings with shared parking use the multi-unit rebate, which pays up to $2,000 per charger, and the strata or owner applies.

Is a Tesla Wall Connector eligible?

No. BC Hydro and FortisBC both say Tesla charging stations are no longer eligible. Check the eligible list before you buy.

Does BC Hydro pay for an electrical panel or service upgrade?

Not on its own. BC Hydro pays $200 toward a power management device, which can avoid a service upgrade. CleanBC pays for a service upgrade only for income-qualified homes switching from fossil fuel heat to a heat pump.

Is there a rebate for LED lighting in BC?

We found no home lighting rebate on BC Hydro's list of residential rebates in October 2026.
