What Barre uses

The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey shows 2,385 of Barre's 4,094 occupied homes (58%) heating mainly with oil, 627 (15%) with propane, 569 (14%) with electricity and 175 with wood. If your hot water comes from the oil boiler, a heat pump water heater lets you stop firing it in summer. That is a smaller project than a whole-home heat pump, and the Efficiency Vermont rebate is the same $600 either way.

Half of Barre rents

2,032 of Barre's households rent and 2,062 own. 1,922 housing units are in buildings of two to nine units. A landlord who pays for the water heater and a tenant who pays for the oil have opposite incentives. Efficiency Vermont lists this rebate for residential properties, so ask whether an owner of a multi-unit building can claim it for each tank, a point we did not verify.

Old houses

46% of Barre's housing units were built in 1939 or earlier, so many basements are old. Green Mountain Power says a heat pump water heater removes moisture from the air as it works. Whether your basement has space, a drain and a circuit is a question for the installer. Our Barre insulation guide covers the larger heat-loss problem in the same buildings.

The power draw, in plain numbers

Green Mountain Power says a heat pump water heater runs at about 550 watts against 4,500 watts for a standard electric water heater, roughly eight times less power while running. Barre's average January low is -11.9°C and its record low in 2015 to 2024 was -30.9°C. A unit that draws heat from the air in an unheated basement will have less to draw on in January, so ask the installer about the minimum room temperature for the model you are considering.

Compared with Montpelier

Both cities are Green Mountain Power territory with the same rebate. The difference is the fuel: Barre has more oil households and fewer wood and propane ones, so the water heater question is more likely to be about an oil boiler. Montpelier readers can see the Montpelier water heater guide.

How to claim a water heater rebate in Barre

  1. Check which fuel heats your water today, and the age of the tank.
  2. Choose a heat pump model on Efficiency Vermont's qualifying list and ask the installer to apply the discount on the invoice.
  3. Confirm the installation spot has the space and drainage the unit needs.
  4. If your income may qualify, ask Efficiency Vermont about the extra $400 before you order.
  5. Keep the invoice and model number for your records.
