What Barre heat pump buyers can get

An instant discount from Efficiency Vermont: $375 for systems up to 2 tons and $475 over 2 tons, applied at purchase by your contractor.
Ducted heat pump
$1,200 up to 2 tons, $1,700 over 2 and under 4 tons, $2,200 at 4 tons or more, for qualifying cold-climate equipment.

Green Mountain Power income-eligible rebate
For households at or below 80% of area median income. A household of four in Washington County must be at or under $91,200. The rebate is combined with Efficiency Vermont's in one application on Efficiency Vermont's site.
Efficiency Vermont income bonus
$2,200 for Green Mountain Power low-income customers, $200 for most other utilities' customers. Rental property owners are not eligible. Income limits changed on July 1, 2026.
Ground source heat pump
Plus $500 for income-eligible households. New systems up to 10 tons, an Efficiency Excellence Network contractor, and not for wood-heating customers.
Barre sits in Washington County, so the four-person limit is $91,200. We did not pull income data for Barre, so use Green Mountain Power's published table rather than guessing whether your household qualifies.
Oil country
The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey counts 4,094 occupied homes in Barre. 2,385 (58%) heat mainly with fuel oil or kerosene, 627 (15%) with propane, 569 (14%) with electricity, 201 (5%) with piped gas and 175 (4%) with wood. A household with an oil boiler and radiators and no ductwork usually starts with a ductless system for the main living area, then decides whether to keep the boiler for the coldest nights.
Half the city rents
2,062 Barre households own their home and 2,032 rent, almost exactly 50% each. 1,426 housing units sit in two-, three- and four-unit buildings, and 496 more in five-to-nine-unit buildings. For a landlord, Efficiency Vermont's rebates are open to rental properties, but the income bonus is not. For a tenant, a heat pump is a conversation with the landlord, who also decides whether the old system stays as backup.
If you rent and pay your own heating bills, ask whether the landlord would share the cost. A heat pump that cuts the oil you buy may be worth the rebate paperwork for both sides.
Old buildings
2,012 of Barre's 4,335 housing units, 46%, were built in 1939 or earlier, a higher share than Montpelier's. Weatherization comes first in these buildings. How cold Barre gets
Barre's average January low is -11.9°C, and the coldest day between 2015 and 2024 reached -30.9°C. That is the second-coldest record in our five Vermont cities, behind Rutland. Efficiency Vermont's rebates are for qualifying cold-climate units, and the specification sheet for the model you choose will say what it delivers at the bottom of its range.
Ground source heat pumps
Efficiency Vermont pays up to $2,100 per ton on qualifying ground source heat pumps, plus $500 for income-eligible households, for new systems up to 10 tons. Wood-heating customers are not eligible. Whether your lot suits a ground loop is a site question for a licensed installer, and we did not verify any Barre-specific ground conditions.

It is not a rebate condition we found, but a tighter house needs a smaller system. Efficiency Vermont pays up to $3,000, or $7,000 if income-eligible, for weatherization.
How are Barre and Montpelier different for rebates?
The offers are the same because both are Green Mountain Power territory in Washington County. The housing differs: Barre has more oil, more old buildings and a 50-50 owner-renter split.
