What we found for Vermont heating help

Each card names the official page we read on October 21, 2026. Dollar amounts are the state's own; anything it does not publish, we do not show.

Seasonal Fuel Assistance

Part of your heating bill

A portion of your home heating bills, whether you own or rent and whether you pay for heat directly or through rent. How it is paid depends on your main fuel.

Check first

Free weatherization

At no cost

Once you are an active Seasonal Fuel Assistance household you are also eligible for weatherization services.

Who qualifies

You may qualify if your gross monthly household income is at or below 185 percent of the federal poverty level for your household size. Some people living with you, such as a caretaker or roomer, may not count in your fuel household, and their income is not counted, but you must list them on the form.

How to apply

If you got fuel assistance last season, the state sends you an annual review form. If you did not, apply online through myBenefits, ask for a paper application at 1-800-479-6151, apply in person at your district office, or print the fuel-only form if you want only fuel help.

What it pays

The state says it will pay a portion of your heating bills and that how it is paid depends on your primary fuel and whether you pay directly or through rent. The page gives no dollar amount, so we show none.

The dates

The page was last updated on March 19, 2026. It does not give an opening date for the 2026-27 season. Call 1-800-479-6151 or visit a district office to confirm timing before you plan around it.

Where to get fuel

The state keeps a list of fuel dealers certified with Seasonal Fuel Assistance. Wood and wood pellet suppliers do not have to be certified. Benefits are paid directly to the dealers for eligible applicants.

Weatherization is the long-term fix

Free weatherization for fuel assistance households can lower costs for years. For other Vermont offers, see the pages below.

Annual review forms

If you got Fuel Assistance last season, you will not start from zero: the state sends you an annual review form to fill out. Read it carefully and send it back on time, since late forms are the most common way people lose a month of help. If you move, tell your district office so the payment goes to the right dealer.

Wood, pellets and other fuels

The state says firewood and wood pellet suppliers do not have to be certified to receive Fuel Assistance payments, while other fuel dealers do. If you heat with wood, ask your supplier how they take payment. If you heat with oil or propane, pick a dealer from the state's certified list so the payment goes through.

What this page cannot tell you

We did not find a 2026-27 opening date or a dollar benefit on the official page, which was last updated in March 2026. We will add both once the state publishes them. Until then, call 1-800-479-6151 and ask.

Keep your phone number current

The district office may need to reach you for a missing paper. Give a number you answer, and check your myBenefits account so a request does not sit unread.

What to do in Vermont this winter

  1. Check your gross monthly income against 185 percent of poverty for your size.
  2. Use myBenefits to apply, or call 1-800-479-6151.
  3. List everyone in the home, even those who do not count.
  4. Choose a certified fuel dealer if you use oil or propane.
  5. Ask about weatherization once you are approved.
