JCP&L

For an ENERGY STAR smart thermostat installed with an HVAC job, for a limited time through June 30, 2027.

Comfort Partners
Thermostats are among the free measures for households at or below 250% of the federal poverty level.
Check each page's rules about which thermostat models qualify before you buy. The programs list approved products, and a model that is not on the list earns nothing.
The free route first
If PSE&G is your utility, book the Whole Home Energy Assessment before you buy anything. The visit takes about an hour, and PSE&G can install an ENERGY STAR smart thermostat at no cost, with other small products such as LED bulbs and door sweeps while supplies last. If your income is low, Comfort Partners and PSE&G Home Weatherization can include a thermostat too.
What a smart thermostat does for savings
It lets you set a schedule once and change it from your phone. The savings come from heating and cooling less when no one is home. It does nothing for a house that leaks air through the attic, which is why weatherization comes first in many homes. See our weatherization guide.
Heat pumps and thermostats
A heat pump works best with a thermostat that knows how to run it. Utilities pay for a thermostat as part of the same job: PSE&G lists $60 with an install and Atlantic City Electric lists $150 with an HVAC job. Ask your contractor to include the thermostat on the same invoice so the rebate is applied for you.
Which one should you buy
Pick a model that is on your utility's approved list and works with your heating and cooling system. A heat pump with a backup heater needs a thermostat that can control both stages, so tell the seller exactly what is in your home before you buy. If you rent, ask your landlord before you replace a thermostat, and keep the old one to put back when you move.
Demand programs
A thermostat can also earn money by joining a demand program. Atlantic City Electric's Energy Wise Rewards pays up to $100. PSE&G has programs called FlexPower and SmartFlex, which we did not read in detail. Read the fine print about how much control the utility gets, and how to opt out of an event.

- Find your utility on your electric bill.
- If it is PSE&G, ask for a free Whole Home Energy Assessment first.
- Otherwise buy an ENERGY STAR smart thermostat from the approved list.
- Apply within the window: 120 days for JCP&L and PSE&G post-purchase rebates.
- Keep the receipt and model number.
