Charge Up New Jersey: $1,500 to $4,000

New Jersey Electric Car and Home Charger Rebates in 2026

Two kinds of money exist for electric driving in New Jersey: help buying the car and help setting up a charger at home. The state pays for both through Charge Up New Jersey, and PSE&G pays for charger setup for its own customers. Funds are limited. Here is what we read on October 6, 2026, and what to do first.

PSE&G off-peak charging credit

Discontinued

PSE&G stopped new enrollments on January 13, 2026, and its page lists October 1, 2026 as the end date. PSE&G points to its time-of-use rate instead.

The state says Charge Up is projected to remain available through June 2027 but that funds are limited, so apply as soon as you decide.

What a Level 2 charger is

A Level 2 charger runs on 240 volts, the same kind of circuit as an electric dryer. It adds range much faster than a plug into a normal wall outlet. The word "smart" means the charger connects to the internet so it can follow time-of-use prices and report its use. PSE&G requires that kind for its rebate.

The electrical panel can be the real cost

A charger needs room on your electrical panel. If your panel is full, the cost jumps. Atlantic City Electric pays up to $300 per circuit or panel for homes switching to electric equipment, and up to $4,000 for a panel upgrade for income-qualified homes. JCP&L pays $300 per circuit and up to $4,000 for income-qualified panel work, but only inside its Clean Comfort heat pump program. Plan your charger and your heat pump together so one panel upgrade does both jobs.

Order of steps matters

For the $4,000 Charge Up+ amount, you must apply online and get a pre-qualification number before you buy or lease. For the standard $1,500, the amount is applied at the dealership. Ask the dealer whether they take part before you fall in love with a car. The charger rebate has its own application, so read the program's rules before buying the charger.

Time-of-use rates

PSE&G has a time-of-use rate for customers who can shift use to off-peak hours. Charging overnight is the classic case. The rate may or may not lower your bill, depending on when your household uses power. Ask PSE&G for a bill comparison for the last 12 months before you switch.

Condos and renters

The state also lists a multi-unit dwelling charger program, which we did not read in detail. If you rent or live in a condo, ask your building manager before you buy a charger, and check that program's page.

  1. Check whether you are income-qualified and apply for Charge Up+ before you shop.
  2. Pick a car from the state's eligible vehicle list and an eligible dealer.
  3. Hire an electrician to check your panel and quote the charger.
  4. If PSE&G is your utility, apply for the charger setup program and allow up to three months.
  5. Keep receipts for the charger and the electrical work.
