Up to $10,000 from PSE&G

Heat Pump Rebates in Newark

Newark is on PSE&G's official service list for electric and gas, and PSE&G pays real money for a heat pump. The big rebate is for homes that now heat with gas, oil or propane. A standard heat pump earns a smaller instant rebate. Newark is a city of renters and two-family buildings, so who can apply matters as much as the amount. Here is what we read on PSE&G's own program page on October 6, 2026.

State federal-funded home rebates

Not open

We found no New Jersey launch date or amounts for the federal home energy rebates, so we show nothing here.

The headline amount on PSE&G's page is the big one, but it comes with rules. The heat pump must be on a cold climate list, the company installing it must be in PSE&G's contractor network, and the project needs a heating load calculation before any equipment is picked.

Newark is mostly renters

The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) counts 113,384 occupied homes in Newark. Only 24.4% are owned and 75.6% are rented. PSE&G's heat pump rebates are for people who own their home, so most Newark households cannot apply for themselves. If you rent, the useful step is to show your landlord the rebate page. A landlord who owns the building can use the money, and a tenant who pays an electric bill still gains from a more efficient system.

Two-family and small buildings

Detached houses are only 12.6% of Newark's homes. Buildings with two to four homes are 40.6%, the biggest share, and 10.6% are attached houses such as rowhouses. If you own a two-family building and live in one half, you can qualify: PSE&G's building decarbonization rules cover single-family and attached homes of one to four units, as long as you own the home where the work happens. The account holder at that address signs the agreement.

Which rebate fits how Newark heats

Utility gas heats 68.3% of Newark homes, electricity heats 22.6%, bottled gas 2.8% and fuel oil 2.5%. If you burn gas, oil or propane, the large Clean Heat rebate is the one to chase. If your home already has electric heat, that large rebate is not written for you. You would use the standard instant rebate of $300 to $600, plus the $300 income-qualified bonus if you qualify, and you would save mostly on the bill. Electric baseboard homes can save a lot, because a heat pump moves heat instead of making it.

Older buildings need ductwork checked

About 65.6% of Newark's homes were built before 1980, and 23.7% before 1940. Only 18.2% went up in 2000 or later. Older buildings often have no ducts at all, or ducts that were sized for another system. PSE&G pays up to $2,000 for re-ducting when the design calls for it, and up to $2,000 for taking the old system out of service. Ask your contractor to show both lines on the quote.

How the money reaches you

The standard rebates show up as a line on your contractor's invoice, so you pay less on the day. You do not wait for a check. The repayment option lets you spread the rest across your PSE&G bills. Read the repayment terms before you sign. The page lists 84-month terms, and income-qualified customers can have 84 or 120 months on projects over $10,000.

How to claim a PSE&G heat pump rebate in Newark

  1. Check that PSE&G is your electric company and that you own the home. Renters ask the owner.
  2. Call PSE&G's program line at 1-855-846-2895 or open the program page and pick a participating contractor.
  3. Ask for a heating load calculation and a written quote that lists each rebate line and any re-ducting or removal work.
  4. Say whether you qualify for the income-qualified amounts and bring proof if the contractor asks.
  5. Sign the customer form after the work is done. The rebate comes off your invoice.

Common questions

Can renters in Newark get PSE&G heat pump rebates?

Not on their own. PSE&G's page says customers must own their home. A tenant can ask the building owner to apply.

How much does PSE&G pay to replace gas heat with a heat pump?

Up to $10,000, or half the project cost if that is less. Income-qualified homes can get up to $12,000 or 60%. There is extra for removing the old system and for re-ducting.

I already heat with electricity. What do I get?

The standard instant rebate of $300, $450 or $600 depending on the model, plus $300 more if you are income-qualified.

Is there a federal tax credit for a heat pump in Newark?

No. The federal 25C credit ended for work done after December 31, 2025.

Does New Jersey have its own heat pump rebate?

Not one we could confirm. The state's federal-funded home rebates have no launch we could find. Your utility is where the money is today.
