Up to $700 for wiring, more on Discount Rate

Massachusetts Home EV Charger Rebates in 2026

Both big Massachusetts utilities help pay for the wiring you need to charge an electric car at home. The catch: the 2026 programs end soon, and you must sign up for off-peak or managed charging to get paid. Here is what each pays and the dates to watch.

What Massachusetts utilities pay in 2026

Amounts come straight from each utility's program page, read on October 3, 2026. They are maximums, and a rebate never exceeds what you paid.

Open

National Grid Off-Peak Charging

Closed

Federal home charger credit (30C)

$0 after June 30, 2026

The 30% federal credit covered chargers placed in service through June 30, 2026, in eligible areas. Nothing for installs after that.

Dates to watch. Eversource needs your full application, with Managed Charging enrollment, by November 1, 2026, and its program ends December 31, 2026. National Grid asks you to finish the work and apply by December 10, 2026. Both say 2027 offers will change. If you plan to install this year, start now.

Which utility are you on?

Look at your electric bill. Eversource serves Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Newton, Springfield and New Bedford. National Grid serves Worcester, Lowell, Lynn, Salem, Quincy, Brockton, Fall River and Lawrence. Worcester is a good example of why to check: it gets gas from Eversource but electricity from National Grid. The electric company is the one that pays for an EV charger. If a Municipal Light Plant sends your bill, neither program applies, so ask your light plant.

The charger has to be smart

Eversource requires a Wi-Fi Level 2 charger rated 80 amps or less and on its qualified product list. National Grid requires a vehicle or charger on its compatible list for Off-Peak Charging. A cheap charger that cannot connect to Wi-Fi may cost you the rebate, so check the list before you buy.

What managed charging means for you

Both utilities now ask you to charge mostly when the grid is quiet. National Grid's off-peak hours run from 9 at night to 1 the next afternoon, which suits most people who charge overnight. In return you get a small bill credit and a lower cost per kWh. For most drivers it changes very little day to day.

What it costs and what you save

The wiring is usually the expensive part, especially if your panel needs an upgrade. That is exactly what these rebates cover. Ask your electrician for a quote that splits the charger, the wiring and any panel work, so you can see what the rebate pays.

How to claim your charger rebate

  1. Check which electric utility is on your bill.
  2. Pick a smart Level 2 charger on your utility's list.
  3. Have a licensed electrician do the wiring and keep the invoice.
  4. Enroll in Managed Charging (Eversource) or Off-Peak Charging (National Grid).
  5. Apply before the deadline: November 1, 2026 for Eversource, December 10, 2026 for National Grid.
