What Massachusetts pays for appliances
Each card names the MassCEC page we read. Appliance rebates never exceed the price of the product.
Induction cooktop
For switching from a gas or propane cooktop to induction. It is a switch rebate, so replacing an electric range with another does not qualify under the wording we found.
Heat pump clothes dryer
MassCEC lists an ENERGY STAR clothes dryer rebate of $50 for heat pump dryers.
Heat pump water heater
An instant rebate when you replace an electric, oil, propane or gas water heater. MassCEC's example shows a $3,200 installed unit costing $2,450 after the rebate.
Free home energy assessment
The assessor can tell you which of the offers above apply to your home.
We could not confirm current Mass Save amounts for washers or for refrigerator and freezer recycling. Older pages on this site quoted figures for those, and we removed them because no source supported them. Ask a Mass Save representative or check the Mass Save rebate page in your own browser before planning around either.
Switching from gas to induction
The $500 induction rebate is for people leaving gas or propane. That fits any kitchen that cooks with gas today. The cooktop works through a magnetic field, so the pan has to be magnetic. A simple test is whether a fridge magnet sticks to the bottom of your pots. Cast iron and many stainless pots pass, and aluminum and copper alone do not. Ask an electrician whether your kitchen has the circuit an induction range needs before you buy, since a gas kitchen may not.
The heat pump dryer
A heat pump dryer earns $50 under MassCEC's listing. That is small next to the price of the machine, and the rebate never exceeds the product cost. The reason to consider one is not the rebate. Many heat pump dryers condense moisture instead of venting hot air outdoors, which can matter in a building without a good exterior vent. Cycle times and electricity use vary by model, so check the maker's figures rather than a general claim.
Water heaters are the bigger appliance
If you are replacing a hot water tank, the $750 heat pump water heater rebate is larger than every other appliance offer combined. It is an instant rebate, so the contractor takes it off the invoice. Heat pump water heaters belong to a different Mass Save category from the small appliances, so read the heat pump pages for the full rules.
Renters and condos
Appliances that come with an apartment belong to the landlord, so a tenant cannot usually claim a rebate for them. A tenant who buys their own dryer or cooktop can ask whether Mass Save will treat them as the customer, but we have not confirmed that. Condo owners can claim for appliances in their own unit, subject to the building's rules about gas lines and electrical work.
Why we kept this to one page
Mass Save's appliance offers are the same across the state. A separate page for each city would repeat these four cards with the city name changed, which helps no one. The city pages for heat pumps and insulation say more about local housing and fuel, and they are linked below.
How to claim a Massachusetts appliance rebate
- Check that you are switching from gas or propane for induction, or buying a heat pump dryer.
- Look up the current rebate on the Mass Save or MassCEC page for that appliance.
- Confirm the model is on the qualified list before you buy.
- Buy and keep the receipt and model number.
- Follow the rebate steps for that product, since some are instant and some are mailed.
