Up to $500 instant discount, unconfirmed

Massachusetts HRV and ERV Rebates in 2026

A heat recovery ventilator is one of the few ventilation products Mass Save mentions. Search results show a $500 instant discount for qualified units in retrofit projects, but Mass Save's website blocked our automated reader, so we could not confirm the amount or the rules. This page says what we know, what we do not, and how to check.

What we found for Massachusetts home ventilators

The card below carries a status that says the amount is not confirmed. We would rather show that than state a rebate we could not read.

Mass Save instant discount

Up to $500, to confirm

A Mass Save contractor page on instant discounts for residential HVAC equipment is reported to list $500 off qualified HRV and ERV equipment for retrofit projects. The discount goes through a Mass Save contractor at the point of sale. We could not open the page on October 5, 2026.

Weatherization

75% to 100% off

Not a ventilator, but the offer that most often comes before one. Insulation, air sealing and weather stripping are covered at 75% as standard, and generally 100% for income-qualified households or certain buildings with one to four units.

The assessor can say whether a sealed-up house needs mechanical ventilation, and which product fits.

Federal credits

Ended

The 25C credit that once covered some ventilation work does not apply to 2026 installs.

We removed an earlier claim of $400 to $800 for ventilation installed with weatherization. We found no source for it.

What an HRV does

A heat recovery ventilator brings fresh air in and sends stale air out, moving heat from the outgoing air to the incoming air on the way. One Canadian consumer guide puts the heat recovered at 65% to 85% or more, which reduces the load on your heating system compared with opening windows. An energy recovery ventilator also moves moisture between the two air streams. A city guide from Saskatoon notes that an ERV is often the better pick in a cold, dry climate. Massachusetts winters are milder and damper than the prairies, so the choice depends on the house. Ask your contractor.

Why it comes up after weatherization

Mass Save pays for air sealing and insulation, and a tighter house exchanges less air on its own. That is when a ventilator becomes a question. If the assessor finds the house is very tight, ask what ventilation the contractor recommends before the work is signed off, not after.

How to confirm the discount

Ask a Mass Save heat pump or weatherization contractor, in writing, whether the HRV or ERV you are quoted is on Mass Save's qualified list and what the instant discount is for your project. Because the discount is applied by the contractor at the point of sale, the quote should show it as a line item. If the quote shows no discount, ask why. You can also open the Mass Save contractor page in your own browser, since it works for people and blocked our reader.

Upkeep

A ventilator only works if its filters are kept clean. One guide says to clean or replace them every one to three months and to keep the outdoor intake and exhaust clear. That is a recurring chore and should be part of your decision.

Condos, rentals and multi-unit buildings

A tenant cannot fit a ventilator in a building they do not own. Mass Save runs separate commercial programs for energy recovery ventilators in larger buildings, so a condo board planning ventilation should ask Mass Save about those, not the residential discount.

What to do in Massachusetts if you want an HRV

  1. Book the free Mass Save assessment and ask whether the house needs mechanical ventilation.
  2. Ask a Mass Save contractor whether the quoted unit is on the qualified list.
  3. Have the contractor show any instant discount as a line item on the quote.
  4. Get a second quote from another Mass Save contractor.
  5. Plan to clean the filters every one to three months.

Common questions

Is there a Mass Save rebate for an HRV?

Mass Save is reported to offer a $500 instant discount on qualified HRV and ERV equipment for retrofit projects. We could not open the page, so confirm the amount with a Mass Save contractor.

What is the difference between an HRV and an ERV?

Both recover heat from outgoing air. An ERV also moves moisture between the streams, which can help keep a house from getting too dry in winter.

Do I need an HRV after air sealing?

It depends on how tight the house is. The home energy assessment is the place to ask.

Does the federal tax credit cover an HRV?

No. The 25C credit ended for installs after December 31, 2025.

How often do I clean an HRV?

One guide says every one to three months for the filters. Follow your unit's manual.
