EV Charger Rebates in Worcester

Working it out

Say an electrician charges $1,800 to run a 240-volt circuit to the driveway of a Worcester three-family, shared by the tenants. National Grid's 2-4 unit rebate is up to $1,400, so the owner pays about $400. In a single-family house with a $900 wiring job, the rebate is $700 and you pay $200.

Why the 2-4 unit rule matters in Worcester

The US Census Bureau's survey (2020 to 2024) counts 85,876 homes in Worcester. About 34% are in buildings with two to four units, and only about 32% are single-family detached houses. That makes the 2-4 unit rebate the one many Worcester owners should look at first.

About 57% of Worcester households rent. If you rent, National Grid's advice is to tell your landlord, because the landlord usually pays for the outlet. Whoever pays for the work is the one who applies. If the tenant holds the electric account and the landlord pays, the landlord adds a Third Party Payee form.

Landlords can wire before tenants have an EV

National Grid pays landlords of 1-4 unit buildings to add 240-volt outlets for current or future tenants. If nobody in the building owns an EV yet, or parking is shared, the Off-Peak Charging sign-up is waived. A ready outlet is something you can mention when you list a unit.

Cold winters and charging

Worcester's average January low is about -6.3°C, and the coldest reading in our ten years of data was -27.2°C. Batteries charge slower in the cold, and many Worcester homes are old, so the panel may be the real question. About 75% of homes were built before 1980, and about 41% before 1940. Ask your electrician whether your panel has room before you count on the rebate covering everything.

Check the environmental justice map

Parts of many Massachusetts cities are mapped as environmental justice neighbourhoods. If your address is in one, National Grid raises the wiring rebate to up to $1,000 for a single family or $2,000 for a 2-4 unit building, as long as your EV cost $55,000 or less. The state's map is on mass.gov. Discount rate (R-2) and environmental justice customers can also use National Grid's Turnkey program, where the same incentive comes off the bill up front instead of as a cheque later.

How to get the EV charger rebate in Worcester

  1. Check that your car or charger is on National Grid's compatible list, then enroll in the Off-Peak Charging Program before you install.
  2. Hire a licensed electrician to install a 240-volt circuit or outlet where you park.
  3. Apply online with the electrician's invoice, or by mail. Call AM Conservation at 1-800-651-3445 with questions.
  4. Apply by December 10, 2026. National Grid says incentives are expected to change in 2027.
  5. Your cheque comes about 6 to 8 weeks after your Off-Peak enrollment is confirmed.

Common questions

Is there an EV charger rebate in Worcester?

Yes. National Grid, Worcester's electric company, pays up to $700 for the home wiring in a single-family house and up to $1,400 in a 2-4 unit building. Income-qualified and environmental justice customers can get more.

Does the rebate pay for the charger itself?

Only for customers on National Grid's low-income discount rate (R-2), who can get up to $700 toward a qualified smart charger. For everyone else, the rebate covers the 240-volt wiring.

I rent in Worcester. Can I get this?

Your landlord usually pays for the outlet, so the landlord usually applies. If you hold the electric account and the landlord pays, the landlord sends a Third Party Payee form with the application.

Is Worcester on Eversource for EV charging?

No. Eversource lists Worcester as a gas town, not an electric town. National Grid delivers Worcester's electricity, so its EV program is the one that applies.

Is there still a federal tax credit for home chargers?

No. The IRS says the 30C credit covered chargers placed in service at your home up to June 30, 2026.
