What insulation rebates pay in Fort Collins
We read Efficiency Works' insulation and air sealing sheet and rebate page on October 5, 2026. The program serves residential electric customers of Fort Collins Utilities, and also Estes Park, Longmont and Loveland. The Xcel rebates on our Denver page do not apply to Fort Collins Utilities customers.
Walls, basement walls, floors, cathedral ceilings
Also conditioned crawl spaces, cantilevers, floors over garages and conditioned attics, with extra requirements for each.
Flat attic
Attic knee walls that are already insulated also pay $0.77. Uninsulated knee walls pay $1.16.
Air sealing
By how much blower-door testing shows air leakage dropping: over 15% pays $310, over 25% $460, over 33% $620 and over 50% $770.
Bundling bonus
If you also install a heat pump within six months of the envelope work.
Rental bonus
Rental properties served by Fort Collins Utilities get twice the standard retrofit rebate, with a 12-month lease and approval before work. It does not double the bundling bonus.
State income-based rebates (HEAR)
Up to $1,600 for insulation and air sealing while open. Larimer County was in the Front Range region, now closed.
Federal tax credit (25C)
Ended for spending after December 31, 2025.
Working it out
A flat attic of 1,200 square feet at $0.77 earns $924. Air sealing that cuts leakage by 30% falls in the over 25% tier and earns $460. Together that is $1,384. Add 1,000 square feet of exterior walls at $1.16 and the rebate is $1,160 more. With a heat pump installed within six months, the $2,000 bonus lifts the total to $4,544 (before the heat pump's own rebate). A package above $2,500 needs approval before work starts, or the total is capped at $2,500, and the rebates and bonus can never exceed what the work cost.
What Fort Collins homes look like
The American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) counts 74,558 homes in Fort Collins. About 52% of households own and 48% rent. About 52% of homes are detached houses, and 9% are in buildings of two to four units. Only 31% were built before 1980, which is the lowest of the five Colorado cities we cover, and 37% were built in 2000 or later.
Fort Collins has fewer old homes than Denver or Boulder, so a measured assessment matters: a newer house may need only air sealing, while an older one may need attic and wall work. The program requires an Efficiency Works assessment first.
The assessment comes first
Efficiency Works requires the home to complete an assessment before you apply for the insulation or air sealing rebate. Insulation work needs pre and post air leakage testing and a combustion safety test, so a gas furnace or water heater is checked for safe operation when the house gets tighter. Work must be done by an Efficiency Works listed service provider, on a home at least a year old, and you apply within 45 days of finishing.
How the rates work
The per-square-foot rate rewards the size of the job: $1.16 for most spaces and $0.77 for a flat attic. Conditioned crawl spaces have three required parts: a vapor and radon barrier, an insulated foundation wall, and an insulated and air sealed rim joist, all to Efficiency Works specifications. Attics that become conditioned require removing old insulation from the attic floor. The air sealing payment depends on the percent drop in air leakage, so a leakier house has more room to earn.
What Fort Collins heats with
About 66% of households heat with utility gas and 31% with electricity. Efficiency Works' insulation rebates are the same for both. If you heat with electricity, the saving per dollar of insulation is larger. If you plan a heat pump, do the envelope work within six months of it to qualify for the $2,000 bonus, and see our Fort Collins heat pump page.
Cold in Fort Collins
Our climate file, built from ten Januaries (2015 to 2024), gives Fort Collins an average January low of about 16°F and a coldest day near minus 28°F. The envelope rebates only pay for what a blower door test and assessment support, so ask the assessor to show you where the air leaks.
