Up to $5,000 from Xcel Energy

Colorado Home Battery Incentives in 2026

If Xcel Energy is your power company, Colorado has one of the better home battery offers in the country. Xcel pays you upfront for the battery and a little each year, as long as it can use your battery on busy days. Here is how it works.

What Colorado pays for a home battery

Amounts come from Xcel Energy's Renewable Battery Connect page, last read on September 29, 2026.

Open

Renewable Battery Connect (general)

Up to $5,000

$250 for each kW of continuous power the battery can give, up to $5,000. A battery that gives 5 kW would get $1,250.

Open

Income-qualified homes

$1,000 per kW

Capped at 75% of the equipment cost. Homes in a Disproportionately Impacted Community get $500 per kW, with the same 75% cap.

Open

Yearly payment

$100 a year for 5 years

Paid on top of the upfront amount while you stay enrolled.

Closed

Federal battery tax credit

$0 for 2026

The 30% federal credit ended for spending after December 31, 2025.

The program reopened on May 21, 2026. Xcel's page said the general budget was $13.6 million with $11.3 million left on September 1, 2026. Money is first come, first served, so check what is left before you sign.

The rules that matter

Xcel's offer comes with strings. The battery must be charged by solar. It must be a model Xcel accepts: on our last read, that meant a Tesla Powerwall or a current Enphase battery. And Xcel gets to use your battery during peak events, the busy summer afternoons when the grid is strained. You still get backup power in an outage.

Notice that the amount is based on kW, the power the battery can give at once, not kWh, the energy it stores. Two batteries with the same storage can earn different amounts.

If you are not on Xcel

Not every Colorado home buys power from Xcel. If your bill comes from a city-owned utility or a rural electric co-op, Xcel's program does not cover you. We have not checked those utilities' battery offers yet, so call yours and ask before you buy. Ask three questions: is there an upfront amount, is there a yearly payment, and does the utility control the battery on busy days?

Adding solar too?

Since Xcel wants the battery charged by solar, many homes add both at once. Xcel's Solar Rewards pays $1 per watt up to 10 kW in 2026, but only for income-qualified homes and homes in a Disproportionately Impacted Community. Other homes get no upfront solar payment from Xcel this year.

Does it pay off?

For a general Xcel customer, $5,000 off plus $500 over five years takes a real bite out of the price. For income-qualified homes, the per-kW amount is four times higher, so a battery can cost a fraction of the normal price. Your installer should show you the exact rebate for the battery they quote, in writing.

Questions to ask before you sign

Ask the installer to write down the battery's continuous power in kW, since that sets your rebate. Ask how many hours of backup you get for the circuits you care about. Ask what happens to your rebate if the program budget runs out before your install is done. A good installer will answer all three without fuss.

How to claim the Xcel battery incentive

  1. Check that Xcel Energy is your electric company on your bill.
  2. Ask your installer for a battery Xcel accepts, charged by solar.
  3. Ask the installer to check the remaining program budget and reserve your spot.
  4. If you think you may be income-qualified, apply for that first. The amount is much higher.
  5. Enroll the battery so Xcel can use it during peak events, and keep it enrolled to earn $100 a year.
