$1 per watt, income-qualified homes only

Home Solar Rebates in Colorado

Two big things changed for Colorado solar. The 30% federal tax credit ended for spending after 2025, and Xcel Energy's upfront payment now goes only to income-qualified homes and homes in Disproportionately Impacted Communities. This page says what is left, and what we could not check.

What Colorado pays for home solar

We re-read the federal credit page and the Colorado Energy Office page on October 5, 2026. Xcel's Solar Rewards amount comes from our September 29, 2026 reading of its page, which loads by script and did not open on October 5.

Open

Xcel Solar Rewards (income-qualified and impacted communities)

$1 per watt, up to 10 kW

Upfront payment on the AC size of your system. The 2026 residential products opened on May 21, 2026.

Open

Xcel Solar Rewards (everyone else)

$0 upfront

General Xcel customers get net metering, which credits you for power you send to the grid, but no upfront rebate in 2026.

Closed

Federal clean energy credit (25D)

Ended

The 30% credit ended for spending after December 31, 2025.

Closed

State income-based rebates (HEAR)

Not for solar

The state's home energy rebate program did not list solar among its eligible upgrades, and the single-family program is now closed.

Working it out

A 7 kW AC system for an income-qualified Xcel home: 7,000 watts x $1 = $7,000 upfront. The same system for a household that does not qualify gets $0 from Xcel up front, and no federal credit, so the cost is the full installed price, offset over the years by bill credits. We do not quote Colorado solar prices, since we have not verified any, so ask for three written quotes with the system size in AC watts.

Who gets the Xcel payment

Xcel's 2026 residential Solar Rewards products are limited to income-qualified customers and customers in Disproportionately Impacted Communities. The payment is $1 per watt of AC system size, capped at 10 kW. If you think you may qualify, apply for that first, because the amount can be thousands of dollars. Everyone else is still allowed to install solar and use net metering, but gets no upfront payment this year.

What the end of the federal credit means

The residential clean energy credit ended for spending after December 31, 2025, according to the IRS page. If an installer is still quoting a 30% credit on a 2026 purchase, ask them to show you the IRS rule they are relying on. If your system was paid for and in service in 2025, ask a tax professional about it.

Utilities other than Xcel

Not every Colorado address is served by Xcel. Colorado Springs Utilities and Fort Collins Utilities are city utilities with their own programs, and rural co-ops have others. We read their home rebate pages on October 5 and did not find a solar panel rebate there, so we list none. That does not prove there is none, and net metering rules differ by utility, so ask yours how it credits solar power before you sign.

Pairing solar with a battery

Xcel's battery incentive is built for batteries charged by solar, and it pays far more than solar does for most homes. See our Colorado battery page. Because battery and solar budgets are separate, ask your installer to price the system with and without storage.

Questions to ask before you sign

Ask for the system size in AC watts, since Xcel pays on AC size. Ask whether the quote assumes any rebate and which one. Ask how your utility will credit the power you send to the grid. Ask what happens to the price if Xcel's budget runs out. A good installer will put each answer in writing.

How to approach Colorado solar in 2026

  1. Find your utility on your bill.
  2. Check whether your household is income-qualified or in a Disproportionately Impacted Community, since that decides the Xcel payment.
  3. Get three written quotes with the AC size and the rebates they assume.
  4. Ask how your utility credits solar power.
  5. Do not rely on a federal credit for 2026 spending.
