Up to $500, or $2,300 if income-qualified

Home EV Charger Rebates in Colorado

If Xcel Energy sends your bill, it pays up to $500 for a Level 2 home charger or the 240-volt wiring for one, and more in some neighbourhoods and for some households. You have to enrol in its charging program first. The older EV Accelerate At Home offer has closed to new applications.

What Colorado pays for a home EV charger

The Xcel amounts come from our September 29, 2026 reading of its charger and wiring page, which loads by script and did not open when we tried again on October 5. Fort Collins figures were read from Efficiency Works' January 2026 sheet on October 5, 2026.

State income-based rebates (HEAR)

Closed

The state program offered up to $2,500 for electric wiring and $4,000 for a panel. The single-family program is now closed.

Working it out

Say your electrician quotes $1,400 for a charger and a new 240-volt circuit. A standard Xcel rebate covers up to $500, leaving $900. In an impacted community the cap is $800, leaving $600. For a household that qualifies by income, up to $2,300 would cover more than the whole quote. In Fort Collins, a panel upgrade of $2,500 needed for the charger would earn up to $500 from Efficiency Works on top of anything else available for the charger.

Enrol first

Xcel's rule is that you enrol in Optimize Your Charge before you claim the rebate. We did not read the program's terms in full, so read them before you sign up to see what Xcel can do with your charging times, and check whether your charger or car is eligible.

How the amount depends on where you live and earn

The $500 is the standard rebate. The cap rises to $800 for homes in Disproportionately Impacted Communities, as Xcel defines them, and to $2,300 for income-qualified households. Those higher amounts are caps, not guarantees, since they depend on your actual equipment cost. Ask Xcel which tier your address and household fall in before you buy.

If you are not an Xcel customer

Colorado Springs Utilities and Fort Collins Utilities are city utilities with their own programs. We read their rebate pages on October 5. Efficiency Works for Fort Collins lists a Flex EV program as coming soon, with no amounts, and a panel upgrade rebate that applies when it is paired with a Level 2 charger. We did not find a charger rebate on Colorado Springs Utilities' rebate pages. Rural co-ops have their own programs, so ask yours.

Federal and state credits

We have not verified a current federal tax credit for home chargers, so we state none. Ask a tax professional before you count on one. The Colorado Energy Office's income-based rebate program closed for single-family homes in August 2026.

Panels, wiring and renters

A Level 2 charger needs a 240-volt circuit, and many panels cannot add one without an upgrade. Ask your electrician for a load calculation before you buy the charger. If you rent or live in a condo, you need the owner's or association's approval to install a charger and wiring, so start with a conversation. We did not verify any Colorado rule on tenant charger rights, so we state none.

How to claim a Colorado home EV charger rebate

  1. Confirm Xcel Energy sends your electric bill.
  2. Enrol in Optimize Your Charge before you buy.
  3. Ask an electrician for a quote that separates the charger and the wiring.
  4. Ask Xcel whether your address is in a Disproportionately Impacted Community and whether you qualify by income.
  5. Keep the invoices and apply for the rebate.
