Window and Door Rebates in Kamloops

Kamloops has some of the oldest housing and the biggest temperature swings of any BC city we cover. Hot dry summers and cold winters both make old windows costly.

Quick quiz: home energy in Kamloops

Questions about Kamloops, from the data behind this page. Tap an answer to see why.

1. Rebates in Kamloops often depend on the utility. Which one do we use for Kamloops?

BC Hydro is the utility we use for Kamloops. Rebates often depend on who supplies your power or gas, so check yours first.

2. On average, how low does the temperature fall in Kamloops in January?

Our weather sample for Kamloops (2015-2024) shows an average January low of -6 °C. Cold-climate heat pumps are tested at low temperatures, so check the rating at your coldest days, not just the average.

3. About how many peak sun hours a day does Kamloops get on average?

Our 2020-2024 sunshine sample for Kamloops averages about 3.6 peak sun hours a day. Fewer hours means less solar power per panel, so the size of the system matters.

4. We list heat pump rebates for Kamloops. What is the biggest 'up to' amount?

Our summary for Kamloops: Up to $4,000 from BC Hydro when replacing electric heat (+ up to $1,000 bonus for installs done by Oct 31, 2026); income-qualified gas/oil/propane switches up to $13,000 via CleanBC. The amount you get depends on your home, income and utility, so use the calculator.

5. About what share of homes in Kamloops are rented?

The 2021 Census counts 11,955 renter households out of 39,915 in Kamloops. Many rebates go to owners, and some programs have separate rules for landlords and tenants.

A Kamloops 1960s bungalow

A bungalow with 10 windows, a front door and a side door is 12 openings. That pays $1,200. Windows with a good U-factor also keep afternoon summer heat down, which helps if the house uses air conditioning.

Kamloops's homes in numbers

The 2021 Census counted 39,915 households in Kamloops. About 20,275 (51%) live in homes built before 1981, and 9,895 are owner-occupied detached houses from that period. Detached houses are 50% of households and 19% live in apartments.

A dry climate with real swings

Kamloops's average January low from 2015 to 2024 was -6.1°C and the coldest day was -34.3°C. Summers are hot and dry. Good windows work against both, which means they can pay off year-round if the house is cooled in summer.

Who can claim

The home must be mainly electric-heated, at least 12 months old and a primary residence. The BC Hydro account holder applies, or signs a consent form for someone else to apply. Condos and apartments are covered by a separate program. Outbuildings and garages are not eligible.

Counting openings and certification

Each rough opening counts as one. A bay window is one. Skylights are excluded. Units need a U-factor of 1.22 W/m2-K or lower and a listing from CSA, Intertek, Labtest, QAI or NFRC.

Reading a U-factor label

The rebate needs a U-factor of 1.22 W/m2-K or lower, and lower means less heat loss. Many window labels show the older imperial scale instead. To convert, multiply the imperial number by 5.678. A label that says U-0.30 equals 1.70 W/m2-K, which is too high. A label that says U-0.21 equals about 1.19 W/m2-K and passes. Ask the contractor to quote the metric value for each model so you do not have to convert.

Stacking a second upgrade

BC Hydro pays a bonus of up to $2,000 when you finish more than one eligible upgrade, but its page does not give a formula, so ask when you apply. FortisBC lists a $300 second-upgrade bonus or an EnerGuide improvement bonus of $750 to $2,000. Windows pair naturally with insulation, since both cut heat loss through the building envelope.

If your income is lower

BC Hydro sends income-qualified customers to the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program instead, and the two cannot be combined. The 2026 program document lists no insulation or window rebates, so the free Energy Conservation Assistance Program is the route to ask about.

How to claim in Kamloops

  1. Check the home is electric-heated and a primary residence.
  2. Get quotes that list the U-factor of each unit.
  3. Photograph each label on installation day.
  4. Keep the invoice and apply within six months.
  5. Add insulation to the same application to check the bonus.

Common questions

Do windows help in a Kamloops summer?

A lower U-factor slows heat flow in both directions, so they help against summer heat as well as winter cold.

How cold does Kamloops get?

The average January low was -6.1°C and the coldest day in 2015 to 2024 was -34.3°C.

How many openings are paid?

Up to 20, at $100 each.

Do I need label photos?

Yes.

What if I heat with gas?

FortisBC lists $100 per opening for gas customers.
