A Kamloops example

A charger and install cost $1,000. BC Hydro pays 50%, capped at $350. The City of Kamloops top-up adds $150, for $500 back. Add a power management device and get $200 more, as long as total incentives stay under what you paid.

The Kamloops top-up

The City of Kamloops adds up to $150 to BC Hydro's charger rebate. Together they cover 75% of the cost, up to $500. There is no extra form: BC Hydro adds it when it approves your rebate, as long as your address is in the city.

Charging in a Kamloops winter

Kamloops's average January low from 2015 to 2024 was -6.1°C, and the coldest reading was -34.3°C. Batteries lose range in the cold and charge more slowly when they are cold. A charger in the garage, or a car that preheats while still plugged in, helps on those mornings. With 9,895 households owning a detached house built before 1981, many Kamloops homes have older electrical panels, which is where the $200 power management rebate can save the cost of an upgrade.

Kamloops homes and the size of the job

Kamloops has 20,095 detached houses, about 50% of households, and about 70% of households own. A charger mounted in an attached garage near the panel is the cheapest job. A detached garage or a long run to the driveway adds wire and trenching, which raises the cost. Because the rebate is 75% up to $500, a $650 job gets almost all of it back, while a $2,000 job still gets $500. Price the run before you choose where the charger goes.

Picking a charger

A Level 2 charger runs on 240 volts and can fill most cars overnight. Choose one on BC Hydro's eligible list. If you want the Peak Saver credit too, pick a smart charger that BC Hydro lists for Peak Saver. During a few winter peak events, November to March, BC Hydro may slow your charging for up to four hours; you can opt out of events.

Who in Kamloops can use it

The rebate is for single-family homes, row homes and duplexes. The 2021 Census counted 39,915 households in Kamloops; 50% (20,095) live in a detached house and about 70% own. If you live in an apartment or condo, BC Hydro has separate multi-unit building rebates, and the City of Kamloops also offers multi-unit top-ups of up to $1,000 for EV Ready plans and charger installs.

Panel upgrades and power management

Many older homes do not have spare room in the electrical panel for a 40 or 50 amp charger. A power management device shares power between the charger and the rest of the house, so you may skip a costly panel upgrade. BC Hydro adds $200 for one. All incentives together cannot be more than what you paid.

Tesla chargers

Tesla chargers are not eligible for BC Hydro or CleanBC rebates. Pick a charger from BC Hydro's eligible list.

Common questions

Do I apply separately for the top-up?

No. BC Hydro adds the City of Kamloops top-up when it approves your rebate.

Is a Tesla Wall Connector eligible?

No. Tesla chargers are not eligible.

What is the most I can get?

Up to $500 for the charger with the top-up, $200 for a power management device, and a $250 Peak Saver credit, capped at what you paid.

Can condo owners use this?

Not this rebate. BC Hydro has separate rebates for multi-unit buildings.

I live just outside Kamloops. Do I get the top-up?

The top-up is for addresses inside the City of Kamloops. Outside it, you still get BC Hydro's rebate of up to $350.
