A Kamloops bungalow
A 1,100 square foot attic at R-12 brought to R-50 adds R-38. The formula gives 0.02 x 38 x 1,100 = $836. Add R-12 to 1,000 square feet of wall cavity for 0.09 x 12 x 1,000 = $1,080. The total is $1,916 by our reading of the published formula.
Kamloops's housing in numbers
The 2021 Census counted 39,915 households in Kamloops. Of those, 20,275 (51%) live in homes built before 1981, and 9,895 are owner-occupied detached houses from that time. Detached houses make up 50% of all households. Only 19% live in apartments.
About 5.1% of households told the census their home needs major repairs. If yours has a wet attic or old vermiculite, deal with that before insulating.
A real winter
Kamloops's average January low from 2015 to 2024 was -6.1°C and the coldest day in that record reached -34.3°C. Summers are hot and dry, so insulation works against heat gain too. A well-insulated attic can cut cooling loads as well.
If the old insulation is removed
When old material is pulled out because of pests or moisture, BC Hydro assumes a starting R-value based on the age of the home and pays on the difference. In an older house that can mean a bigger rebate on a full re-do. Put both R-values on the invoice.
Which insulation to choose
BC Hydro accepts batts, loose fill, board and spray foam. A Kamloops bungalow with an open attic usually gets loose fill to add depth. Rigid board and spray foam suit basement walls and rim joists. Compare quotes by finished R-value, not by thickness. The rebate cannot be more than the invoice shows you paid.
Hot dry summers make the attic as important as the walls. A dark roof can push attic air well above outdoor temperatures, so a thicker layer slows that heat from reaching the rooms below.
If your income is lower
BC Hydro sends income-qualified customers to the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program instead, and the two cannot be combined. The 2026 program document has no insulation or window rebates. The free Energy Conservation Assistance Program may include insulation, so ask there before you pay for any work.
