Income-eligible: $2,000 per condenser

Green Mountain Power Home Rebates

GMP's own heat pump rebate is $2,000 per condenser for households at or below 80% of area median income. It is combined with Efficiency Vermont's rebate in one application, and GMP's old rebate URL no longer works.

What GMP pays in 2026

GMP covers much of Vermont outside Burlington and the municipal utilities. Amounts below come from GMP's current pages and Efficiency Vermont.

Open

Income-eligible heat pump rebate

$2,000 per condenser

For customers at or below 80% of area median income, using gross household income. Combined with Efficiency Vermont's rebate in one application made on Efficiency Vermont's site.

Open

Efficiency Vermont income bonus

$2,200 for GMP low-income customers

The heat pump income bonus is highest for GMP customers who meet the low-income guideline.

Open

Heat pump water heater

Up to $600

GMP's page points to Efficiency Vermont, which pays $600 and up to $1,000 for income-eligible households.

Open

Weatherization

Up to $3,000 ($7,000 income-eligible)

Paid by Efficiency Vermont for GMP customers.

The 2026 income limits for 80% of area median income, household of four: $92,150 in Addison County, $99,750 in Chittenden, Franklin and Grand Isle, $91,200 in Washington and $89,200 in other counties.

The county income table

GMP publishes limits by household size and county. A one-person household in Chittenden County, Franklin County or Grand Isle County is eligible up to $69,850, rising to $131,700 for eight people. Washington County runs lower, with $63,850 for one person. Check the county where the home sits, not where you work.

Where GMP's rebate fits with others

The $2,000 sits on top of Efficiency Vermont's discount and income bonus, so a low-income GMP household can stack GMP's rebate, Efficiency Vermont's $2,200 bonus and the standard $375 to $2,200 discount. We do not total the three on this page because the details depend on equipment and household. The Efficiency Vermont page lists each.

Heat pump water heaters

GMP lists heat pump water heaters at up to $600 and sends customers to Efficiency Vermont. A heat pump water heater runs at roughly 550 watts compared with 4,500 for a standard electric element, per GMP's page.

What to ask before you buy

Ask the contractor three questions. Is the unit on Efficiency Vermont's qualifying list, since the rebate only applies to listed cold-climate equipment. How many condensers does the quote use, because GMP pays per condenser and a house with two outdoor units can reach $4,000 from GMP alone. And who submits the application, because the customer uses Efficiency Vermont's website but a contractor can usually enter the details for you. Keep your income documents ready, since the income attestation uses gross household income, and the AMI table above is the test.

If you are over the income limit

Households above 80% of area median income do not get GMP's $2,000, but they still qualify for Efficiency Vermont's standard discounts, which start at $375 on ductless and $1,200 on ducted systems, plus its heat pump water heater rebate. Weatherization pays up to $3,000 at higher incomes. Income can change year to year, so recheck the table each January.

A caution about older links

GMP's former heat pump rebate page returns a 404 now. If an article cites it, the program itself still appears on GMP's heating and cooling page, so use that.

How to claim GMP's heat pump rebate

  1. Confirm Green Mountain Power is your electric utility.
  2. Check your gross household income against the county table.
  3. Choose a contractor and get a quote for a qualifying heat pump.
  4. Apply through Efficiency Vermont's website, which handles GMP's rebate.
  5. Keep the invoice.
