A Coquitlam hillside house

A house with 16 windows and 4 doors reaches the 20-opening cap. The rebate is $2,000, no matter whether the windows cost $20,000 or $40,000. Rebates cannot exceed the invoice cost, but at these prices the cap is the limit.

Coquitlam's homes in numbers

The 2021 Census counted 55,945 households in Coquitlam. About 16,535 (30%) live in homes built before 1981, and 7,305 are owner-occupied detached houses from that period. Another 36% of households live in apartments and 31% rent. About 69% of households own their home.

A mild climate

Coquitlam's average January low from 2015 to 2024 was 0.7°C and the coldest day was -16.8°C. Winters are damp and mild. Comfort and condensation are the main gains, with a modest effect on the bill.

The cap and large windows

The rebate is $100 per opening, not per square foot, so a big picture window earns the same as a small one. That makes the rebate cover more of the cost on small windows and less on large ones. If you are replacing only a few large windows, ask whether the quote leaves room under the cap for doors too.

Counting and certification

Each rough opening is one opening. A bay window with several sections is one. Eligible windows must carry a listing from CSA, Intertek, Labtest, QAI or NFRC and have a U-factor of 1.22 W/m2-K or lower. Skylights are not eligible, and windows must replace existing ones.

Stacking a second upgrade

BC Hydro pays a bonus of up to $2,000 when you finish more than one eligible upgrade, but its page does not give a formula, so ask when you apply. FortisBC lists a $300 second-upgrade bonus or an EnerGuide improvement bonus of $750 to $2,000. Windows pair naturally with insulation, since both cut heat loss through the building envelope.

Use BC Hydro's consumer guide

BC Hydro publishes a consumer guide for window and door replacement. It covers frame materials, glazing types and what to ask a contractor. Read it before you take quotes, so you can compare units on the same terms. The program only checks the U-factor, certification and installation rules, so the other choices are yours.

If your income is lower

BC Hydro sends income-qualified customers to the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program instead, and the two cannot be combined. The 2026 program document lists no insulation or window rebates, so the free Energy Conservation Assistance Program is the route to ask about.

How to claim in Coquitlam

  1. Confirm the home is electric-heated and at least 12 months old.
  2. Get quotes that list each window and door with its U-factor and certification.
  3. Photograph the label on each unit.
  4. Keep the invoice and apply within six months.
  5. Add insulation to the same application to check the bonus.
