What heat pump water heater rebates pay in Coquitlam

We re-read BC Hydro's heat pump water heater page on October 2, 2026. BC Hydro and FortisBC pay only when you replace an electric water heater. Replacing a gas tank earns nothing from them, and the CleanBC amounts below are for income-qualified households only.

A Coquitlam split-level

Replacing the electric tank earns up to $1,000. Adding R-12 to 600 square feet of basement wall earns 0.09 x 12 x 600 = $648. Together $1,648 before any bonus, by our arithmetic on the published formula.

Who in Coquitlam can use this

The 2021 Census counted 55,945 households in Coquitlam. About 69% own, 36% live in apartments, and 7,305 own a detached house built before 1981. Coquitlam's average January low from 2015 to 2024 was 0.7°C. A tank in a heated basement or garage works in a mild climate like this.

Gas tank or electric tank?

Look at the label on your tank or at your energy bills. If it is electric, you can apply. If it burns natural gas, propane or oil, BC Hydro and FortisBC will not pay for a heat pump tank, because both rebates are for electric tanks only. The exception is the CleanBC Energy Savings Program for lower-income households, which lists up to $3,500 for Level 1 and, from an electric tank, up to $2,800 for Level 2. Each home gets one primary water heating rebate across all programs.

E-Plus customers and rate plans

If you are on BC Hydro's E-Plus rate, you can replace your space and water heating equipment without losing the E-Plus service, according to BC Hydro's page. Ask the contractor to confirm that with BC Hydro if your household is on a special rate. The only document the application asks for is the invoice, which makes this one of the simpler rebates to claim.

Condos, rentals and consent

The home rebate does not cover condo or apartment units. BC Hydro runs a separate Condo and Apartment Rebate Program that includes heat pump water heaters. In a rental house the BC Hydro account holder applies, and anyone else needs the account holder's signed consent form.

Pairing with other upgrades

A water heater swap is a quick job and an easy second upgrade. BC Hydro lists a bonus of up to $2,000 when you complete more than one eligible upgrade. Our Coquitlam insulation page and window page show what those pay.
