What BC Hydro pays for insulation in Coquitlam
We re-read BC Hydro's insulation page on October 2, 2026. The rebate is for homes heated mainly by electricity. If your Coquitlam house heats with gas, FortisBC lists the same formula for its gas customers.
Attic
Capped at $900. New insulation must add at least R12.
Walls and basement
Capped at $1,200 for each of wall cavity, sheathing and basement or crawlspace walls.
Floors and other spots
Exposed floors and basement headers, capped at $1,000, at least R20 added.
More than one upgrade
BC Hydro pays a bonus for finishing more than one eligible upgrade.
Lower incomes
Free evaluation and upgrades for income-qualified customers.
A Coquitlam split-level
Take a 1970s split-level with 900 square feet of attic at R-20 topped to R-50, which adds R-30. That pays 0.02 x 30 x 900 = $540. Add R-12 to 600 square feet of basement wall for 0.09 x 12 x 600 = $648. The total is $1,188 by our reading of the formula.
Coquitlam's housing in numbers
The 2021 Census counted 55,945 households in Coquitlam. Of those, 16,535 (30%) live in homes built before 1981, and 7,305 are owner-occupied single-detached houses from that time. Another 36% of households live in apartments, mostly the towers around Burquitlam and Town Centre, and they are not covered by this program. About 69% of Coquitlam households own their home.
A mild climate, with a cold tail
Coquitlam's average January low from 2015 to 2024 was 0.7°C, and the coldest day was -16.8°C. Most days are not cold enough to push a heating system hard, so savings from insulation come mostly from the few cold weeks. The comfort gain is real though, especially in rooms above a garage or over an exposed floor.
Hillside houses have extra edges
A house on a slope can have a walk-out basement with exposed walls, an exposed floor over a carport or garage, and a cathedral ceiling in the main room. Each of those is its own line in the BC Hydro formula, with its own cap and its own minimum R-value. Ask for the existing and added R-value for each area on the quote. Insulation also has to follow the program's best-practice guide for air sealing, which matters most where a basement wall meets the floor above.

Common questions
Does a walk-out basement count?
Yes. Basement and crawlspace walls pay $0.09 per R per square foot, capped at $1,200, and need at least R10 added.
Is my Coquitlam townhouse eligible?
Maybe. Side-by-side row homes qualify if each unit has its own meter and the account is not held by a strata corporation.
How much does Coquitlam's weather matter?
Winters are mild, with a January low near 0.7°C. Savings are smaller than in the Interior, but older houses still gain comfort.
Can I claim for an addition?
No. Insulation required to meet code for a permitted addition or alteration is not eligible.
What if I have gas heat?
BC Hydro's version needs electric heat. FortisBC lists the same formula for gas customers.
