What heat pump water heater rebates pay in Chilliwack

We re-read BC Hydro's heat pump water heater page on October 2, 2026. BC Hydro and FortisBC pay only when you replace an electric water heater. Replacing a gas tank earns nothing from them, and the CleanBC amounts below are for income-qualified households only.

A Chilliwack rancher

Replacing an electric tank earns up to $1,000. A 1,400 square foot attic topped from R-20 to R-50 earns 0.02 x 30 x 1,400 = $840. That is $1,840 before any bonus.

Who in Chilliwack can use this

The 2021 Census counted 35,760 households in Chilliwack. About 72% own and 54% live in detached houses. Of the households, 6,495 own a detached house built before 1981. Chilliwack's average January low from 2015 to 2024 was 0.2°C.

Gas tank or electric tank?

This is the rule that surprises people. Heat pump water heater rebates from BC Hydro and FortisBC start with an electric tank. A gas tank swap is a different case, and households above the income limits have no rebate for it. Income-qualified households can apply to CleanBC, which pays up to $3,500 at Level 1. Only one primary water heating rebate is allowed per home, so you cannot collect from two programs for the same tank.

E-Plus customers and rate plans

If you are on BC Hydro's E-Plus rate, you can replace your space and water heating equipment without losing the E-Plus service, according to BC Hydro's page. Ask the contractor to confirm that with BC Hydro if your household is on a special rate. The only document the application asks for is the invoice, which makes this one of the simpler rebates to claim.

Questions to ask the installer

A heat pump water heater pulls warmth from the air around it, so where it sits matters. Ask the installer how much open space the model needs, how loud it runs, where the condensate drains, and what happens in a cold utility room. These are not program rules, but they decide whether you like the tank after the first winter. Get the answers in the quote.

Farm lots

The rebate covers the home's primary water heater. A tank in a barn, shop or outbuilding does not qualify. The home must be a year-round primary residence.
