What heat pump water heater rebates pay in Abbotsford

We re-read BC Hydro's heat pump water heater page on October 2, 2026. BC Hydro and FortisBC pay only when you replace an electric water heater. Replacing a gas tank earns nothing from them, and the CleanBC amounts below are for income-qualified households only.

An Abbotsford house

Replacing an electric tank earns up to $1,000. A 1,200 square foot attic topped from R-16 to R-50 earns 0.02 x 34 x 1,200 = $816. That is $1,816 before any bonus, by our arithmetic.

Who in Abbotsford can use this

The 2021 Census counted 53,235 households in Abbotsford. About 69% own, 37% live in detached houses and 29% in apartments. Of the households, 6,070 own a detached house built before 1981. Abbotsford's average January low from 2015 to 2024 was 0.1°C, and the coldest day was -18.3°C.

Gas tank or electric tank?

Look at the label on your tank or at your energy bills. If it is electric, you can apply. If it burns natural gas, propane or oil, BC Hydro and FortisBC will not pay for a heat pump tank, because both rebates are for electric tanks only. The exception is the CleanBC Energy Savings Program for lower-income households, which lists up to $3,500 for Level 1 and, from an electric tank, up to $2,800 for Level 2. Each home gets one primary water heating rebate across all programs.

Choose from the NEEA list

BC Hydro pays only for models that sit in Tier 2 or higher on NEEA's Advanced Water Heater Specification list for heat pump water heaters. Ask the installer for the exact model number and check it against the list before you sign. Put the model on the invoice. A tank that is not on the list will not be paid, no matter how efficient it looks.

Pair it with another upgrade

BC Hydro's page offers a bonus of up to $2,000 when you complete more than one eligible upgrade, such as insulation or windows with your water heater. The formula is not on the page, so ask when you apply. FortisBC lists a $300 second-upgrade bonus. A water heater is a quick job, so it is an easy second item to add to a larger project.

Cold utility rooms

A heat pump water heater takes heat from the air around it. If your tank sits in an unheated garage that can drop well below freezing on a cold valley night, ask the installer how the model performs there and whether it has a backup element. The program does not set a temperature rule, so the answer comes from the installer and the model's own specifications.
