What heat pump rebates pay in Grand Rapids
Consumers' chart is for installs from January 1 to December 31, 2026. Only contractors on Consumers' participating list can file. Amounts can change without notice, the chart says.
Air source heat pump
At least 15.2 SEER2, with a matched indoor and outdoor set. Replacing an existing heat pump only.
Ductless mini-split heat pump
At least 17 SEER2 and 8 HSPF2. Replacing a primary electric heat system.
Ground source heat pump
$200 at 17 to 18.99 EER and $300 at 19 or higher. Replacing an existing heat pump only.
State rebates (MiHER)
The state can pay much more, but new income-qualified applications are paused in the Grand Rapids district.
Michigan Saves loan
Finance a heat pump through a credit union, with fixed rates and no early repayment fee.
Federal 25C and 25D tax credits
The federal home energy credits ended for work finished after December 31, 2025. A quote that counts on them is out of date.
Read the replacement rule
On Consumers' own chart, the air source and ground source rows say Replacement for Existing Heat Pump Only. The mini-split row says Replacement for Any Primary Electric Heat System. A gas furnace is not on either list. Call Consumers at 866-234-0445 before you sign if you are unsure.
Who in Grand Rapids fits
The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) says 15.3% of Grand Rapids homes heat with electricity and 82.5% with utility gas. The electric group, often in older apartments and small rentals, is who a mini-split rebate is for. If you already own a heat pump and it is failing, the replacement rebate fits you.
If you heat with gas
A heat pump can still make sense when your central air conditioner dies, because it heats and cools. But Consumers' chart gives no heat pump rebate for that case, so check the Michigan Saves loan and the state program. Consumers does pay $100 to $300 for a gas furnace at 95% efficiency or better, and up to $475 for insulation, which often does more for the winter bill.
Who files the paperwork
Only participating contractors can submit the application, through Consumers' online portal. The chart says it must reach Consumers within 30 days of finishing. Ask the contractor to confirm they are on the list before you sign and to tell you the date they will file.
Check the state program
Michigan's MiHER program covers heat pumps for lower-income households and can pay up to $14,000 for electric equipment. New income-qualified applications are paused in the Grand Rapids district right now. If you applied earlier, that application is still being reviewed. Look up your county and check the page again.
How to claim a Consumers heat pump rebate
- Confirm that Consumers is your electric company and that you are replacing a heat pump or electric heat.
- Choose a participating contractor from Consumers' list.
- Ask for the AHRI certificate for the matched system, since the rebate is based on it.
- Have the contractor install it and file the application within 30 days.
- Expect the check in about six to eight weeks.
