What heat pump rebates pay in Detroit
We read DTE's air conditioner and heat pump page on October 6, 2026. DTE said about 52% of the heat pump funds were already used, and that the rest goes first come, first served.
Cold climate air source heat pump
$1,200 needs a 16+ SEER2 rating and a 9.1+ HSPF2 rating. $1,000 and $900 are for lower ratings. These ratings are on the AHRI certificate.
Ductless mini-split
$1,000 for a very efficient unit (over 31.5 SEER2, HSPF2 of 10). It must replace electric heating.
Standard air source heat pump
$500 at 18+ SEER2, $150 at 15.2 to 17.99 SEER2.
Ground source heat pump
Depends on the EER2 rating.
DTE gas furnace
The nearest rebate for a gas home. Add $300 for qualified installs from October 1 to December 15, 2026.
State rebates (MiHER)
The state program covers heat pumps for lower-income homes, but new income-qualified applications are paused in the Detroit district.
Federal 25C and 25D tax credits
The federal home energy credits ended for work finished after December 31, 2025. A quote that counts on them is out of date.
The rule that decides it
DTE's page says air source and ground source heat pumps are for electric customers replacing electric heating. Mini-splits must also replace electric heating. It also lists new construction as not eligible, and the home must be more than 24 months old. If your furnace runs on gas, plan on the furnace rebate or the insulation rebate, not this one.
Who in Detroit fits
The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) says 16.7% of Detroit homes heat with electricity. That is the group this rebate was written for. If you have electric baseboards or an electric furnace, a heat pump can heat the same rooms with much less power, and DTE pays toward it. Another 80.5% heat with utility gas, and for them the picture is different.
If you heat with gas
A heat pump can still be a good choice when your central air conditioner dies, because it does both jobs. But you would pay for it yourself, since DTE's page does not list gas homes for this rebate. Run the numbers with your contractor and ask what the winter bill looks like on a cold week. Keep the gas furnace for the coldest days if you want a backup. Tune-ups and insulation often pay back faster in an old Detroit house, where 90.3% of homes were built before 1980.
Cold weather and sizing
Ask for a cold climate model and a written sizing calculation, called a Manual J. A unit that is too small leaves you cold, and one that is too big wastes money. For the $900 to $1,200 amounts, DTE ties the rebate to the efficiency ratings on the AHRI certificate for the whole system, not a single part.
Funding is limited
DTE showed 52% of heat pump funds allocated on the day we read the page. It tells customers to apply early. If you are planning a spring job, ask your contractor how DTE's funds look when you sign.
How to claim a DTE heat pump rebate in Detroit
- Confirm on your bill that DTE is your electric company and that you heat with electricity today.
- Get quotes for a model that meets DTE's ratings. Ask for the AHRI certificate for the full system in writing.
- Have it installed by a contractor, and keep the paid invoice.
- Apply on DTE's rebate site within six months of buying.
- If your income is low, ask DTE about Energy Efficiency Assistance first. It is free.
Common questions
How much does DTE pay for a heat pump in Detroit?
$150 to $1,200, depending on the type and the efficiency rating. The top amount is for a cold climate air source heat pump.
Can I get the DTE heat pump rebate if I heat with gas?
Not on DTE's page. The rebate is for electric customers replacing electric heating. Gas homes can claim a furnace rebate instead.
Does the federal heat pump credit still exist?
No. It ended for work finished after December 31, 2025.
Is the state heat pump rebate open in Detroit?
New income-qualified MiHER applications are paused in the Detroit district. Check the state page for updates.
How long do I have to apply?
DTE's insulation and thermostat pages say within six months of buying. We did not see a heat pump deadline on the page, so check the date when you apply. Funds are first come, first served, so apply soon after the install.
