Why insulation fits Grand Rapids
The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) says 75.7% of Grand Rapids homes were built before 1980 and 37.5% before 1940. Utility gas heats 82.5% of homes. When gas heat leaks out through a thin attic, you pay for it all winter. Adding R-value is one of the few upgrades that works with the furnace you already have.
The R-value ladder
Consumers pays more as you aim higher. Going from R-48 to R-60 or more raises the attic rebate from $125 to $200 for a gas customer. That is a $75 difference, which will not decide a job, but it is a good reason to ask your contractor to quote the higher level, since the cost to add more material is often small during the same visit.
Small multi-unit buildings
16.1% of Grand Rapids homes are in buildings of two to four units. Consumers' rules cover separately metered single-family homes and multifamily dwellings with fewer than three units. A duplex qualifies, and a three-unit building does not. Ask Consumers if your building counts.
Plan the work around the weather
Insulation crews can work in most seasons, but an attic is easiest to reach when it is not freezing or hot. Booking in autumn leaves time before the December 31 deadline and before the busiest weeks. Ask the contractor for a start date and a filing date in writing, so a late application does not cost you the rebate.
Free help comes first
The free Consumers home energy analysis shows where heat escapes. If your household income is at or below 200% of the federal poverty level, Michigan's weatherization program installs insulation and air sealing at no cost. The state's MiHER program is paused in the Grand Rapids district for new income-qualified applications.
