Heat pump money for Naperville homes in 2026
The city's program ends when its funding is gone, and its page does not say how much is left.
Heat pump at 15.2 SEER2 or better
Ducted or ductless, with at least 8.1 HSPF2 heating score and 65,000 Btu per hour or smaller.
17 SEER2, keep gas backup
For a higher-efficiency heat pump when you keep your gas furnace or boiler for backup heat.
17 SEER2, no gas backup
The largest amount, for a full switch with no gas furnace or boiler kept for backup.
Attic, window and other city rebates
The city says it gave out all $280,000 of its budget as of June 26, 2026.
Nicor Gas furnace rebate
For a gas furnace replacing a gas furnace. Not for heat pumps.
Federal home energy credit
No federal heat pump credit after December 31, 2025.
You must be a Naperville Electric residential customer, as an owner or renter, and the limit is one incentive per household. Send the complete application within 120 days of the install date.
Why ComEd does not apply
Naperville's electric bill comes from the city's Department of Public Utilities, not from ComEd. ComEd's heat pump discount is for ComEd customers, so a Naperville address has no claim on it. If you are not sure, look at the top of your electric bill. A Naperville bill names the city. Gas is separate: Nicor Gas serves Naperville, according to its list of communities.
How the three amounts differ
The city rewards efficiency and also rewards giving up gas backup. SEER2 is the cooling score and must be 15.2 or more for the lowest amount and 17 or more for the higher two. The heating score, HSPF2, must be at least 8.1. If you keep a gas furnace or boiler as a backup, the amount is $1,400. If you do not, it is $1,800. Your installer must show the AHRI certificate, which is the rating sheet that proves the scores.
The page says all replacement makes and models with certified ratings are included. It is a replacement program, so the unit must replace existing equipment.
Naperville homes in numbers
The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey counts 57,135 homes in Naperville and 54,847 lived in year-round. Owners are 74.8% of households and renters 25.2%. Detached houses are 62.8% of homes, attached houses 12.2% and buildings of two to four homes only 4.6%. Utility gas heats 86.1% of homes and electricity 11.9%. The city says renters can apply too, which is useful for a quarter of households.
Homes here are newer than in the other Illinois cities we cover: 25.8% were built before 1980, 2.5% before 1940 and 23.1% since 2000.
What changed this year
Naperville's other energy rebates, for attic insulation, windows, solar, tune-ups and blower motors, were all given out by June 26, 2026. The city's page did not name the heat pump among them, but it also did not promise money is left. Call the sustainability office at 630-305-5357 before you buy to ask if funds remain. If the money runs out, ask when the city expects to refill it.
Cut the size before you buy
A tight, insulated home needs a smaller heat pump. Nicor Gas pays $500 for air sealing and $400 for attic insulation, with a program-approved contractor. Doing that first can lower the price of the heat pump by letting you buy a smaller unit. Ask your installer to size the unit after the sealing is done.
