Thermostat money in Naperville
The two rebates come from two separate programs with separate forms.
Naperville Electric smart thermostat
Any Wi-Fi smart thermostat that you can adjust from a phone. Owners and renters can apply.
Nicor Gas smart thermostat
One per household, on a home with a gas furnace or boiler, and the thermostat must be on Nicor's approved list or ENERGY STAR certified.
Nicor furnace and thermostat bundle
A 95% or 97% efficient furnace with a smart thermostat on the same application.
Naperville rebates now closed
Attic, window, tune-up and blower motor rebates are used up this year.
Naperville's page does not say that you must give to its Renewable Energy Program for the thermostat rebate, unlike the attic and window rebates.
How the city rebate works
You buy and install any smart thermostat with Wi-Fi that lets you change the temperature from afar. The city says all makes and models are included. You then fill out an application in the city's online portal, which needs an account, and attach your receipt and proof of install. A one-time $75 credit appears on your electric bill within two months. The complete application must reach the city within 120 days of installation. Funding is first-come, and the program ends when it is gone.
How the Nicor rebate works
Nicor's thermostat must be installed on a home with a gas furnace or boiler of home size. It needs a working Wi-Fi connection and features such as geofencing, which uses your phone's location to adjust the heat when you leave. A smart thermostat can replace a manual or programmable one, but not another smart thermostat. Nicor says a rebate from your electric company does not block the Nicor one. Apply within 90 days of install or by January 31, 2027.
Naperville homes in numbers
The Census Bureau's survey for 2020 to 2024 counts 54,847 households in Naperville. Owners are 74.8% and renters 25.2%. Utility gas heats 86.1% of homes, which means most households can use the Nicor rebate, and electricity heats 11.9%, for whom the city's rebate is the main one. Detached houses are 62.8% of homes.
Two thermostats
The city lets you claim two. That helps in a two-story house with two zones, or in a house with an addition. Nicor allows only one per household, so the second thermostat would earn only the city's $75.
Set it up well
A smart thermostat saves energy only if you use its schedule. Ask the installer to set an away temperature and a night setback, and to show you how to change them from your phone. Keep the box and the model number, because both rebate forms ask for them. If you plan a heat pump, ask whether the thermostat you pick works with it, because some thermostats do not control heat pumps well.

Common questions
How much does Naperville pay for a smart thermostat?

Can I get Nicor and the city rebate on the same thermostat?
Both programs are separate, and Nicor's page says an electric company rebate does not block its own. Check each program's terms before you apply.
What is the deadline?
120 days after installation for the city and 90 days for Nicor, or January 31, 2027, whichever comes first.
Do renters qualify?
Yes for the city rebate. Nicor's thermostat is for gas customers, and a landlord can apply.
