Does Mississauga's district energy push at Lakeview affect the home solar rebate?
No — Lakeview Village's district energy system, run by Enwave, is a separate large-scale project and has nothing to do with what an individual homeowner gets. For a single-family home, it's still the province's Home Renovation Savings Program: up to $5,000 for solar at $1,000/kW, capped at 50% of project cost, regardless of what part of Mississauga you're in.
Is solar worth it in Mississauga?
Mississauga averages 3.90 peak sun hours a day over the 2020-2024 stretch — near the top of what we see across our GTA cities, though not by a wide margin. Without a rebate, payback typically runs 10–15 years depending on system size and your local electricity rates.
Mississauga's own utility disappeared into Alectra in 2017
Before 2017, Mississauga had its own local utility, Enersource — that name is gone now, absorbed into Alectra Utilities along with PowerStream, Horizon Utilities, and Brampton Hydro. The provincial solar rebate is identical no matter who your utility is, so the merger changes nothing about the dollar figure above. It does mean the net metering terms you'd sign up for now come from Alectra's province-wide policy rather than anything Mississauga-specific, so check with them directly for current credit rates rather than relying on anything left over from the Enersource era.
3.90 peak sun hours: what that looks like on a real system
Five years of solar radiation data (2020-2024) puts Mississauga at 3.90 peak sun hours a day and 14.03 MJ/m² of daily radiation. Run that through a standard 6 kW residential array and you're looking at roughly 23 kWh of generation on an average day — enough to meaningfully offset a typical household's daytime usage, though your actual number depends heavily on roof orientation and any shading from neighboring homes or trees.
