What's different about doing this in Mississauga
Mississauga homes are on Alectra Utilities for electricity and Enbridge Gas for heat, and most of the housing stock here is gas-heated townhouses and detached homes built between the 1960s and 1990s, the era before Ontario tightened attic and wall insulation requirements in the building code. That makes attic top-ups one of the more common no-assessment claims in the city. There's no Mississauga-specific insulation top-up: the city participates in the joint Peel Residential Energy Program with Brampton and Caledon, but that's currently a free Home Energy Coach pilot capped around 100 homeowners region-wide, not a rebate stream, so the HRSP numbers above are what you're actually working with.
How to claim it
- Attic or cathedral ceiling: confirm eligibility, hire a participating contractor, get it installed, and the contractor submits the application on your behalf.
- Wall, foundation, or crawlspace: book a pre-retrofit energy assessment first, this is also your entry point if you want to ask about the Peel Home Energy Coach pilot, then follow the assessment-path steps.

Common questions
What insulation rebates are available in Mississauga?
The provincial HRSP stack, delivered the same way here as anywhere else in Ontario: up to $1,250 for attic top-ups with no assessment required, and up to $3,600 for exterior walls plus smaller amounts for foundation, crawlspace, and exposed floor once you've booked an assessment. Mississauga doesn't add a local top-up on top of these.
Do I need an energy audit first in Mississauga?
Only for the wall, foundation, and crawlspace tier. Attic and cathedral-ceiling work can go through a participating contractor without one. If you're getting an assessment anyway, ask about the Peel Residential Energy Program's free Home Energy Coach visit, it's not a rebate, but it's a no-cost second opinion before you commit to a contractor.
If your retrofit touches your panel, Alectra is who signs off
Insulation itself doesn't need utility approval, it's the rebate categories that pull in electrical work (a new heat pump alongside the insulation, say) where Alectra Utilities enters the picture. As Mississauga's electric utility, they're the ones who confirm your home's service can handle any added load before a contractor finalizes a bigger combined job. No Mississauga-specific insulation incentive rides on top of the provincial numbers above; the utility's role here is purely on the electrical-capacity side of a retrofit, not the rebate math.
What a Mississauga winter costs an under-insulated home
Ten years of data (2015-2024) puts Mississauga's average January low at -7.8°C, with the coldest night in that window reaching -29.0°C. That's a nearly 30-degree gap between outside air and a comfortable indoor temperature for weeks at a stretch, and every degree of that gap is pushing harder against whatever's in your walls and attic. A home still running R-12 attic insulation is losing real heat on nights like that, which is the specific cost this rebate is built to offset, not a hypothetical one.
