How much you get
This rebate isn't tied to which utility serves your home. Alectra Utilities customers throughout Guelph qualify the same way, whether the battery is paired with new solar panels or added to an existing system.
Home battery storage
$300/kWh installed, capped at 50% of total project cost.
Battery + solar combined
Stacks with the solar panel rebate on the same project.
Stacks with solar, not with net metering choice
The battery rebate stacks with the solar panel rebate for up to $10,000 combined, but it's a separate decision from whether you choose net metering with Alectra Utilities instead of the solar rebate. A battery can still make sense on a net-metered system if you want backup power or want to shift when you draw from the grid; talk to your installer about how battery sizing interacts with whichever solar path you pick.

Local context
Utilities: Alectra Utilities (electricity) and Enbridge Gas (natural gas). Alectra took over Guelph's electricity system when Guelph Hydro merged in on January 1, 2019.
Typical heating: Mostly natural gas, which affects which heat pump tier a household lands in.
Permits & timeline: 6–10 weeks quote to installation for solar, faster for a heat pump swap. City building permit and ESA electrical inspection where required.
Common questions
How much is the battery storage rebate in Guelph?
Up to $5,000: the Home Renovation Savings Program pays $300 per kWh of installed capacity, capped at 50% of total project cost. It stacks with the solar rebate, so a Guelph household doing both can net up to $10,000 combined.
Do I need solar panels to get the battery rebate in Guelph?
Yes. The Home Renovation Savings Program only pays the battery incentive when it's part of a new solar PV project sized for your own household use, not as a standalone purchase. Accepting the combined rebate also means opting out of net metering with Alectra.
Alectra Utilities, not Guelph Hydro, runs the grid now
Guelph Hydro stopped existing as its own company in 2019, folded into Alectra Utilities along with several other Golden Horseshoe LDCs. In 2026 Alectra finally retired GuelphHydro.com entirely, so anyone still bookmarking the old site gets redirected. None of that changes what the province pays out for a battery. It does mean net metering credit rates and interconnection turnaround are set by a utility serving well over a million accounts across the region, not a Guelph-only operation, so it's worth confirming current terms directly with Alectra rather than assuming anything from the Guelph Hydro era still applies.
