What heat pump water heater rebates pay in Squamish
We re-read BC Hydro's heat pump water heater page on October 2, 2026. BC Hydro and FortisBC pay only when you replace an electric water heater. Replacing a gas tank earns nothing from them, and the CleanBC amounts below are for income-qualified households only.
BC Hydro
For replacing an electric primary water heater with a heat pump model on NEEA's Tier 2 or higher list.
FortisBC
For replacing a standard electric storage tank with a high-efficiency heat pump water heater.
Income-qualified (CleanBC)
Level 1 households replacing a fossil-fuel or electric water heater. Level 2 gets up to $2,800 from electric. Applies to a primary water heater only.
More than one upgrade
BC Hydro adds a bonus when you finish more than one eligible upgrade.
A Squamish 1980s house
Replacing an electric tank earns up to $1,000. Adding R-12 to 700 square feet of wall earns 0.09 x 12 x 700 = $756. Together $1,756 before any bonus.
Who in Squamish can use this
The 2021 Census counted 9,185 households in Squamish. About 70% own, 41% live in detached houses and 25% in apartments. Of the households, 1,645 own a detached house built before 1981. Squamish's average January low from 2015 to 2024 was 0.2°C, and the coldest day was -28.1°C.
Gas tank or electric tank?
Look at the label on your tank or at your energy bills. If it is electric, you can apply. If it burns natural gas, propane or oil, BC Hydro and FortisBC will not pay for a heat pump tank, because both rebates are for electric tanks only. The exception is the CleanBC Energy Savings Program for lower-income households, which lists up to $3,500 for Level 1 and, from an electric tank, up to $2,800 for Level 2. Each home gets one primary water heating rebate across all programs.
E-Plus customers and rate plans
If you are on BC Hydro's E-Plus rate, you can replace your space and water heating equipment without losing the E-Plus service, according to BC Hydro's page. Ask the contractor to confirm that with BC Hydro if your household is on a special rate. The only document the application asks for is the invoice, which makes this one of the simpler rebates to claim.
Condos, rentals and consent
The home rebate does not cover condo or apartment units. BC Hydro runs a separate Condo and Apartment Rebate Program that includes heat pump water heaters. In a rental house the BC Hydro account holder applies, and anyone else needs the account holder's signed consent form.
Newer homes
The home must be at least 12 months old, so a brand-new build cannot claim for its original tank. Many Squamish homes are newer, so check the age of your tank and whether it is still working. BC Hydro's page excludes emergency replacement of a broken heat pump water heater. It does not exclude replacing a standard electric tank.
