A Prince George 1960s house

A two-storey with 14 windows, a front door and a back door is 16 openings. That pays $1,600. Pair it with insulation in the same application and you can ask BC Hydro about the multi-upgrade bonus.

Prince George's homes in numbers

The 2021 Census counted 31,795 households in Prince George. About 19,610 (62%) live in homes built before 1981, and 10,470 are owner-occupied detached houses from that period. Detached houses are 58% of households and 17% live in apartments. About 6.5% say their home needs major repairs.

Long, cold winters

Prince George's average January low from 2015 to 2024 was -9.7°C, and the coldest day was -42.4°C. Windows from before 1981 are more likely to have early double glazing or none at all. Check the label on yours, because a window that was fine for a 1970s code may be well below the 1.22 W/m2-K rebate level.

Who can claim

The home must be mainly electric-heated, at least 12 months old and a primary residence. The BC Hydro account holder applies, or signs a consent form for someone else to apply. Condos and apartments use a separate program.

Counting openings and certification

Each rough opening counts as one. A bay window is one. Skylights are excluded. Units need a U-factor of 1.22 W/m2-K or lower and a listing from CSA, Intertek, Labtest, QAI or NFRC.

Reading a U-factor label

The rebate needs a U-factor of 1.22 W/m2-K or lower, and lower means less heat loss. Many window labels show the older imperial scale instead. To convert, multiply the imperial number by 5.678. A label that says U-0.30 equals 1.70 W/m2-K, which is too high. A label that says U-0.21 equals about 1.19 W/m2-K and passes. Ask the contractor to quote the metric value for each model so you do not have to convert.

Use BC Hydro's consumer guide

BC Hydro publishes a consumer guide for window and door replacement. It covers frame materials, glazing types and what to ask a contractor. Read it before you take quotes, so you can compare units on the same terms. The program only checks the U-factor, certification and installation rules, so the other choices are yours.

If your income is lower

BC Hydro sends income-qualified customers to the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program instead, and the two cannot be combined. The 2026 program document lists no insulation or window rebates, so the free Energy Conservation Assistance Program is the route to ask about.

How to claim in Prince George

  1. Check the home is electric-heated and at least 12 months old.
  2. Get quotes that list the U-factor of each unit.
  3. Photograph each label on installation day.
  4. Keep the invoice and apply within six months.
  5. Add insulation to the same application to check the bonus.
