An older house on a larger lot
A 1,600 square foot attic at R-14 brought to R-50 adds R-36. The attic formula gives 0.02 x 36 x 1,600 = $1,152, so the $900 cap applies. Adding R-12 to 1,000 square feet of exterior wall pays 0.09 x 12 x 1,000 = $1,080. Total: $1,980 by our arithmetic.
A city of owned houses
The 2021 Census counted 33,110 households in Maple Ridge. About 79% own their home and only 17% live in apartments. That is the highest ownership share in our BC list apart from the Township of Langley. Of the households, 9,480 (29%) live in homes built before 1981, and 5,160 are owner-occupied single-detached houses from that time. With 53% of households in single-detached houses, there is a lot of attic and wall space the rebate can reach.
Acreage, outbuildings and secondary suites
Parts of Maple Ridge are rural. The program covers the house but not garages, shops or outbuildings. A detached house with a secondary suite can qualify if each is separately metered. Homes that BC defines as substantially reconstructed under the Homeowner Protection Act are excluded, which can matter after a major rebuild.
Weather
The average January low from 2015 to 2024 was 0.1°C and the coldest day was -19.6°C. That is a deeper low than Surrey or Burnaby, because Maple Ridge sits farther inland near the mountains. A cold night can sink well below freezing while the average stays mild, so a good attic matters on those nights.
Which insulation to choose
BC Hydro accepts batts, loose fill, board and spray foam. For a Maple Ridge house with an open attic, loose fill is the usual way to add depth over what is already there. Closed wall cavities in an older house are often filled by blowing material in through small holes. Spray foam and rigid board suit basement walls and rim joists. Each type carries a different R-value per inch, so compare quotes by finished R-value, not by thickness.
The rebate cannot be more than the invoice shows you paid, so a cheap job with a high formula result is paid at cost.
If your household income is lower
BC Hydro tells income-qualified customers to apply to the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program instead of this one, and the two cannot be combined. We checked the 2026 Energy Savings Program document and it lists heat pumps, water heaters, ventilation and electrical upgrades, but no insulation or window rebates. The no-cost Energy Conservation Assistance Program may still include insulation, so ask there first.
